FAITH NEWS SERVICE – A new picture book, The Greatest Treasure, by Vicky J. Wedel (Redemption Press), shares some of the names of Jesus and their meanings in a way that children will understand.

The book shows He is more than just a name and that who He is cannot be adequately and fully expressed in human language. When children learn His names and what they mean, their understanding of who He is grows beyond simple descriptors like “kind” and “loving.”

The Greatest Treasure sticks to a treasure hunt theme, with readers being introduced to the greatest treasure of all—Jesus! Just like a treasure chest that’s filled with priceless jewels, Jesus’s sacrifice and love for us are truly valuable beyond our estimation. In beautiful rhyming language, readers are shown aspects of Jesus’s character, how He is present in our lives, and what He does for us.

Written with depth, rich wording, and concepts not often seen in picture books, this is a story that will grow with the child and that can be read again and again. Adult readers are included, as at the end of the book a letter is written just to them, as well as a glossary of familiar terms, such as “sin” and “confess.”

The included Bible verses help readers identify the timeless truths that are presented, and they could be used as a springboard for family devotions, further discussions, and learning.
