I guess each author has his own story to tell, but when I read secular books, I see a need for an internal struggle that is compelling. Most Christians leave this out because they are so focused on the cosmic battle between good and evil.”
Matt Posey, author of A Haunt for Owls (Redemption Press), certainly doesn’t shy away from addressing internal struggles and darkness in the human heart in his debut fiction set in the old West. His unlikely themes for a western Christian novel are explored through a trio of flawed characters and range from the aftereffects of war, justice, moral relativism, madness, and murder to Indian religion.
A Haunt for Owls is a story of three people coming to terms with the darkness of the human heart without God, taking justice into their own hands, overcoming fear, and choosing whether to live justly.
As Doyle Hill and his wife, Annie, scratch out a future on arid, unforgiving ranchland, Doyle’s perceived failures and the trauma of his Civil War experience prevent him from fully trusting anyone. Annie, a Choctaw orphan from the Indian Territory, has her own demons, but her caring, gentle nature and trusting heart give her hope. Harper, the brooding, deeply damaged younger ranch hand attached to Doyle since the war attempts to hide his spiraling mistrust and deceit. When opposing forces challenge them, Doyle fights to maintain control, Annie reverts to the fears of her Choctaw upbringing, and Harper begins a descent into madness.
When murders occur in ranches around them, fear escalates, taking all three in diverging paths. As a seemingly mythical evil figure continues to attack, they cannot know that the evil manifested is closer to them than they had ever imagined.
