FAITH NEWS SERVICE – “As a society tries to suppress and hide the reality of death, it inevitably becomes less prepared for it. I, for one, want to be ready when it comes for me—and it will come for me, and you, and everyone you know, unless Jesus returns first,” writes Marshall Segal, president and CEO of desiringGod.org, in an article titled “Do You Want to Die Well?”
A new release, God, I’m Broken:Finding Hope and Comfort in Your Grief Journey could just as aptly have been titled How to Die Well. In this Redemption Press release, award-winning author Ann Griffiths chronicles the story of her friend’s diagnosis of bone cancer, the short months to her death, and the journey through grief both women traveled.
When her best friend and ministry partner died, Ann Griffiths was surprised by the raw grief that rolled over her. Friends called Ann and her next-door neighbor, Donna Inglis, “conjoined twins,” as they did everything together—travel, ministry, church, shopping. They’d met forty years earlier and had promised they’d be there for each other when the end came.
This forty-day devotional beautifully chronicles Donna’s final journey and Ann’s own journey of intense grief following her friend’s death. It shows us how to die well—with faith, humor, love, and hope in Christ for the future. No pat answers or typical solutions to grief, this is a deeply personal chronicle of losing a best friend yet finding joy in the process of letting go.
Griffiths processes her pain and the raw emotions she felt as she faced the loss. She says, “When someone we love leaves this earth, it’s as if we lose a precious treasure. As if all that remains is a deep, dark hole. We don’t know how we’ll survive the pain. Let alone how we’ll move forward without our loved one.”
But along with a recounting of the pain come words of encouragement and comfort centered in Christ from someone who has been there that will resonate with anyone experiencing the loss of bereavement. There was joy in the journey of these two women, one dying, one facing loss, that gives hope for something we all must face.
