The 2026 NYC Big Book Award has recognised ENCOUNTER – A Journey into Chaos, Culture and Compassion as AWARD WINNER in two categories – Multicultural Nonfiction and Christian Nonfiction.  The competition is judged by experts from different aspects of the book industry, including publishers, writers, editors, designers, booksellers, librarians and professional copywriters. Winners and distinguished favourites are based on overall excellence.

ENCOUNTER – A Journey into Chaos, Culture and Compassion

A memoir written with the pace of a thriller, Encounter grabs your attention, moves your heart, and uses lived experience to show what happens when simple assumptions and ideals collide with real world reality.  When Ian and Heather Reilly volunteer to teach in Western Samoa, they’re engulfed in a devastating cyclone on arrival, and then painfully struggle to find place and purpose in a bewildering indigenous culture and oppressive climate.   As they emerge from disaster chaos, they lurch from comedy to crisis while confrontation with violence, suffering and suicide challenges many of their deeply held beliefs.  As beauty emerges from the physical and emotional hardship and visceral grittiness of cultural encounter, they build enduring relationships and count the cost of compassion.

NYC Big Book Award received book submissions worldwide. Attorneys, Doctors, Entrepreneurs, Film & Television writers, Historians, Journalists, and Professors, from well-established authors to first-time indie authors as well as small and large presses participated.

Entries this year were received from the United States as well as countries such as Australia, Canada, China, Dubai, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, New Zealand, Scotland, Singapore, South Korea United, Sweden, Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.  Cities represented among the entries were Auckland, Baltimore, Dallas, Frankfurt, Hollywood, Johannesburg, Manhattan Beach, New Orleans, NYC, Philadelphia, Sydney, and West Palm Beach.

Publishers included Ark House Press, Beacon Press, Berrett-Koehler, Casemate, Edinburgh University Press, Forbes Books, Kiplinger Books, NYU Press, Palgrave Macmillan, Penguin Random House, Rizzoli, Routledge, University of California Press, University of Nebraska Press, Weaving Influence Press, and Wiley.

Winners and distinguished favourites included Encounter – A Journey into Chaos, Culture and Compassion by Ian Reilly, The Lab Press’s “Essentials Vol. 1” by Luke Arnold (Black Sails) & Chris “Doc” Wyatt (TV producer/writer); Berrett-Koehler’s “Catch People Doing Things Right” by Martha C. Lawrence; The White House Historical Association’s “White House Memories 1970–2007:” by Gary J. Walters (White House Chief Usher); and “Eternal Love” by Xuemo to name some key titles on the awarded list.

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – It’s your first time overseas. You arrive in Samoa—nervous, naïve, and unprepared for what lies ahead. Two weeks later, Cyclone Ofa strikes, devastating everything around you: homes, roads, crops, power lines, and water supplies.

Instead of learning the language as planned, you’re cooking over a campfire, collecting spring water, and rationing dwindling food supplies. What began as a two year aid program becomes a crash course in survival—and in Samoan living.

ENCOUNTER: A Journey into Chaos, Culture and Compassion is the true story of Ian Reilly and his wife Heather, who volunteer to teach in a remote Samoan school. When disaster hits a country already among the world’s least developed, the Reillys find themselves thrust into a life far beyond their expectations—marked by both hardship, struggle and personal transformation.

In the aftermath of Cyclone Ofa, they face the mountainous struggle of rebuilding while adapting to an alien culture. They learn to de-husk coconuts and cook with coconut cream, painfully sit cross-legged for hours on concrete floors, and to avoid offending people by introducing them, because in Samoa it’s considered bad manners.

They often walk long distances down dusty mountain roads, or travel in pickup trucks that frequently break down, and wait for buses that may never come.  But even more confronting than the physical challenges is the cultural upheaval—the feeling of living on shifting sand, in a fishbowl where every action is observed, discussed and judged.

Expecting a peaceful tropical escape, they instead face an intense rollercoaster of heat, working by candlelight, comedy, conflict, and tragedy. Samoa reveals itself as a land of sharp contrasts: stunning beauty and ugly violence, simple communities supported by complex relationships, , and happiness in the face of trauma.

Through this raw, immersive journey, the Reillys discover the vast gap between visiting a culture and truly living within it. With unflinching honesty, ENCOUNTER explores the tension of navigating cultural obligations, hierarchical traditions, and life-shaping experiences. Their assumptions—about justice, truth, good and evil, poverty, development, and even their own faith—are stripped back and re-examined. In doing so, readers are invited to reflect on their own cultural lenses, especially in a time when Western society is itself wrestling with rapid cultural change.
