State of the Christian Workplace 2024 Report Highlights Employee Engagement Trends

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – (Mercer Island, WA)—The State of the Christian Workplace 2024 report provides insights into employee engagement and workplace health in Christian-led workplaces. For the first time, results from Best Christian Workplaces research are publicly available in an accessible and statistically valid format.

Now leaders who want to take steps to create a flourishing workplace culture can learn about what matters to employees in Christian-led workplaces. This glimpse into employee engagement highlights anonymous feedback from more than 100,000 Christian employees across multiple sectors.

Jay Bransford, President and CEO of Best Christian Workplaces, emphasizes the importance of workplace health: “Healthy Christian-led workplaces can succeed in spreading Christ-like service, character, and values to the world. Our research shows that in 2023 around 55% of employees in Christian-led organizations felt positively engaged. This is far higher than the percentage that is observed in the secular world. Having a healthy workplace doesn’t just happen. It takes intentional effort. Of the organizations we surveyed in 2023, we found that about 29% fell below our criteria for a “Healthy” score. This striking reality reminds us that many Christian leaders still need to be equipped to build Flourishing WorkplacesTM. Best Christian Workplaces exists to provide such support.”

Along with overall data, the State of the Christian Workplace 2024 report highlights trends over the past five years by demographics and by sector. As a leader in the study of employee engagement, Best Christian Workplaces has a robust data set that includes thousands of employee voices. The size of the data set allows statistically reliable categorization by different types of organizations.

Included in the report are the following categories:

  • Churches
  • Parachurch and Missions
  • Rescue Missions
  • Family Services
  • Christian Schools (K-12)
  • Higher Education
  • Businesses
  • Other Nonprofits

For more than two decades Best Christian Workplaces has come alongside Christian-led organizations to measure employee engagement and make positive steps to improve their workplace culture. Ministry Partners who use the research-based Employee Engagement Survey have access to their own data, and can also see how they compare to their peers. They benefit from the guidance of experienced Best Christian Workplaces consultants who help them interpret their results and develop action plans to improve workplace health.

Learn more about the attributes of a flourishing workplace by reading the State of the Christian Workplace 2024 report. Then listen to the voices of your own employees through an Employee Engagement Survey, and commit to action that improves workplace health.

241 Organizations Honored as “Certified Best Christian Workplaces” in 2022

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – (Mercer Island, WA)— Today, Best Christian Workplaces (BCW) honors 241 faith-based organizations and Christian-owned businesses as Certified Best Christian Workplaces in 2022.

As many organizations continue to face challenges related to the ongoing shift from virtual and hybrid work environments, these workplaces demonstrate upstanding dedication to building and protecting a strong workplace and prioritizing healthy working relationships amongst teammates and managers.

Says Jay Bransford, CEO, “Although many people report increased productivity when they have more flexibility with their work location, it can also bring with it some unique challenges. Thus, when Best Christian Workplaces provides actionable data and feedback from our employee engagement survey, leaders of organizations feel well-equipped to understand which aspects of their culture are being negatively affected and in what ways staff would like more support from their supervisors/managers.”

Faced with high inflation and low unemployment, this year’s survey results also highlight the squeeze many employers have also felt in the area of rising labor costs. The factors highlighted in the survey, specifically concerning compensation, have helped organizations determine how pay impacts their employee’s levels of engagement and motivation, and their likelihood to look for higher-paid work elsewhere.

“Approaches to compensation strategy can vary, but the most successful organizations are proactive and intentional,” explains Bransford. “In some cases, leaders simply identify a need to better communicate their pay philosophy and benefits programs. And in other cases, leaders have identified a need to re-assess the pay, benefits and/or career path opportunities offered.”

Now more than ever, employees have the ability to choose where they want to work and what they want their workplace to be like. As a result, employers who take the health of their workplaces seriously are at a significant strategic advantage. The 241 organizations honored today set the gold standard for excellence in employee engagement, and BCW is hopeful and expectant for the year to come.

“Imagine what would happen in our societies if Christian-led organizations decided to rise up and set the standard as the best, most effective places to work in the world,” says Bransford. “Not only would it mean that Christian-led workplaces would successfully attract and retain the best talent, but they would also be positively representing the nature and character of God in and through their workplace cultures. In doing so, they would bring more people to Christ. Now that’s something to be hopeful and expectant about in the year ahead!”

This year’s Certified Best Christian Workplaces list features organizations in the United States, Canada, Australia, Thailand, and Zambia, and includes a variety of faith-based nonprofits, churches, Christian schools, camps and conferences, and Christian-owned businesses. Validated by their own employees, certified organizations must meet the required scoring standard through BCW’s robust employee engagement survey.

Best Christian Workplaces Announces Revitalized Brand, New Website and Expanded Services

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – (Mercer Island, WA)—Best Christian Workplaces is excited to announce expanded services, a brand refresh, and the launch of a new website — workplaces.org.

Best Christian Workplaces is the new, streamlined organizational name. The word “Institute” has been dropped from the name to elevate the emphasis on the vision, which is that Christian-led workplaces set the standard as the best, most effective places to work in the world. While the name has changed, the solid foundation of research remains intact. Best Christian Workplaces has the most comprehensive database of employee engagement data that exists in the Christian realm. BCW will continue to use this professional expertise as they serve more Christian-led organizations.

Jay Bransford, CEO, shares his enthusiasm for the direction of Best Christian Workplaces: “These changes will help us communicate the value of Best Christian Workplaces to more people. We are now poised to come alongside the current and next generation of leaders, to meet their unique challenges. In the past, our ministry partners have used our Employee Engagement Survey but haven’t always been aware of how BCW can serve them in additional ways. With a new, dedicated emphasis on sales and marketing, ministry partners will now be fully aware of all the BCW resources. Having Robert Wachter, Global Marketing Director, in place allows us to focus on providing a top-notch experience for our ministry partners.”

Workplaces.org is the new, easy to navigate website. It clearly explains how Best Christian Workplaces can come alongside organizations and help them on their journey to flourishing. The new website simplifies access to BCW professional services and provides resources to equip leaders to use the proven three phrase process: Discover, Build, and Grow.

The road to flourishing starts with the Discovery phase. Becoming a thriving workplace begins with evaluating and measuring the current level of organizational, leadership, and team health. BCW supports the discovery phase through the Employee Engagement Survey and Leadership 360 assessment. Clear and actionable data is the foundation to building a flourishing workplace culture.

In the Build phase, BCW has professional consultants ready to help identify key focus areas for cultural growth and create winning action plans. The consultants are specially trained to conduct Discovery Groups, provide HR consulting, and support overall team development.

In the Grow phase, BCW provides resources that allow leaders to continually nurture their workplace culture. A robust library of tools keeps progress on track—including Flourish Guides, specialized Toolkits, and many free resources full of key insights to help build engagement.

Robert Wachter, Global Marketing Director, sums up the impetus for changes at Best Christian Workplaces: “We care about everything that impacts your workplace and ministry, as we serve a growing number of churches, nonprofits, educational institutions, and Christian-led businesses. Best Christian Workplaces is expanding to encompass a full range of services that will increase employee wellbeing. Empowering healthy workplace cultures enables the organizations we serve to flourish and ultimately have a bigger kingdom impact.”

Visit workplaces.org to see the next steps on the road to flourishing.

109 Organizations Honored as “Certified Best Christian Workplaces”

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – MERCER ISLAND, WA – Today, Best Christian Workplaces Institute (BCWI) honors 109 faith-based organizations and Christian-owned businesses as Certified Best Christian Workplaces in the first half of 2022.

These workplaces reported strong satisfaction with team dynamics, even during a season when external research reveals the prevalence of isolation and disconnection at work.

What’s unique about organizations that are certified as Best Christian Workplaces? Employees at these workplaces affirm good teamwork and conflict resolution skills in their responses to the BCWI Employee Engagement Survey. Even in the face of lower satisfaction with compensation and benefits, employees find high levels of meaning and value in their work as their organizations achieve their goals.

In today’s tight labor market where employees are feeling the pinch of inflation, leaders are concerned about their ability to compete for top talent and offer compensation and benefits to retain employees. Jay Bransford, CEO of BCWI addresses these challenges: “Many organizations are facing financial pressure, especially if they experienced a drop in donations or other revenue streams over the past few years. Rewarding compensation and outstanding talent are two important factors for flourishing organizations in the long-term. Even as these areas are lagging, top-ranking organizations see the benefit of investing in teamwork and sustainable strategy to increase employee engagement.”

Another challenge for effective leadership is healthy communication. After several years of adaptation in workplace patterns, employees need consistent communication to increase their engagement. Organizations that have a healthy workplace culture have found ways to effectively communicate and work together toward common goals even when employees are not all at the same comfort level with hybrid or virtual work settings.

Workplaces that are flourishing have leaders who are proactive rather than reactive in a changing environment. Bransford underscores the importance of great leadership in influencing workplace culture: “We live in a world of dynamic change—from changing global political and economic realities, to cultural shifts in society. Effective leaders need to continuously take the pulse of their organizations to better understand the state of their flock and how best to support, attract, and retain top talent. No other factor impacts the performance of an organization to a greater extent than its culture. Therefore, proactively assessing and developing a healthy culture is a strategic imperative for all leaders. BCWI is the expert in assessing the culture of Christian organizations—applying robust data and experienced, professional consultants to guide you along the road to flourishing.”

This year’s Certified Best Christian Workplaces list features organizations in the United States, Canada, Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, and Zambia, and includes a variety of faith-based nonprofits, churches, and Christian-owned businesses.

Since 2002, BCWI’s Employee Engagement Survey has been completed by more than 340,000 employees from over 1,300 organizations in the US, Australia, Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, Central and South America.
