FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Every boarding school has one. She plays the tricks, stirs up the classmates, and organises the midnight feasts. She’s sporty, sharp, fiercely loyal, and occasionally infuriating. Meet Rebecca White, better known as Bec, the heroine of Bec’s Detective Squad, the new mystery from Tasmanian author and illustrator Annette Coles, published by Ark House.
A Character Too Good to Leave Behind
Bec first appeared in Annette’s Castle School Series, set at a girls’ boarding school in Victoria. She was so much fun to write, and so full of potential, that Annette knew she deserved a series of her own.
“Bec has a response ready for anything and can worm her way out of most situations,” says Annette of her creation. She is also brilliant at poking her nose into things no one else dares to touch. She can be stubborn and determined to a fault, yet she is exactly the person you want beside you in a sticky situation. Giving up simply isn’t an option.
Trouble in Darwin
In this first adventure, Bec’s time in Darwin takes a thrilling turn when she stumbles into a gang of robbers. With the clock ticking until she must return to school, she races to put a stop to their crimes. Along the way, readers meet characters from all walks of life and discover that not everyone is what they seem.
Christian readers will also appreciate the Biblical principles shown by some of Bec’s friends, and will learn alongside them the wisdom of making the right choices.
A Lifelong Love of Mystery
The series grew from Annette’s own love of mystery books. Writing her own has been a long-held goal, and Bec’s Detective Squad challenged her to weave many different threads into one mystery with a single, satisfying resolution. It has become her favourite book to write so far.
With Bec’s journey only just beginning, and her passion for puzzles opening the door to countless future adventures, readers will be eager to see where she lands next. Bec’s Detective Squad, published by Ark House, is now available globally.
