FAITH NEWS SERVICE – With over twenty years of experience as a retired Public Safety Dispatcher, Elizabeth Abshire strives to assist fellow dispatchers in finding moments of peace during their daily routines.

She has penned a devotional specifically for dispatchers and it is available for purchase in time for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW). Its title is “I Hear Voices; Devotions for Dispatchers.”

In her acknowledgements, Elizabeth states, “I am so grateful to my friends and former colleagues who have entrusted me with their stories. They are real heroes! They have been able to walk through these events and come out on the other side with a deeper relationship to their Savior, and they have shared these stories in the hope they will make a difference in your own story.”

“Elizabeth Abshire’s I Hear Voices, is a powerful and deeply personal reflection on the unique challenges faced by first responders—particularly dispatchers—whose unseen sacrifices often go unrecognized. Through poignant storytelling and heartfelt debriefs, Abshire captures the camaraderie, resilience, and emotional toll that come with serving in law enforcement.

Her stories, such as the Number Two No Cheese, where an officer’s simple act of kindness made all the difference or the struggle of transitioning from the chaos of duty to the demands of home life, resonate deeply with anyone who has worn the badge or answered the call.

The book serves as both a tribute to the often-overlooked dispatchers who keep us safe and a reminder that small acts of support—whether a meal, a break, or a moment of understanding—can have a profound impact.

I highly recommend this book to officers, dispatchers, and anyone seeking to understand the unbreakable bond between those who serve. It is a testament to the strength of our profession and the importance of taking care of one another. I Hear Voices, is more than a collection of stories—it’s a call to remember the humanity behind the headset and the badge.”
