The Horizon Events: A Veil is Torn

From Near-Death to New Worlds: Luke A. Winter Turns Cardiac Arrest into Sci-Fi Story of Hope and God’s Love

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – When Luke A. Winter suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in 2020 — at just twenty years old — he thought his story might end. Instead, it became the spark that pushed him to finish a dream he had carried since high school — writing a novel.

Luke, a preacher, theology student, and document controller from Western Australia, had long kept his writing a quiet pursuit. “I never told many people about my writing, because I wanted to finish something first,” he admits. But waking up in a hospital bed changed everything.

“One of the first things I said was, ‘I can’t be here. I have to finish my book.’ My parents didn’t even know I was writing!” Luke recalls. By Christmas of that year, his manuscript was complete, and it went on to receive a high commendation in the 2021 Fogarty Literary Award.

That book has now become The Horizon Events: A Veil is Torn — a fast-paced science fiction adventure that blends cosmic conflict with timeless truths.

Set seven years after the galaxy’s Core Star Fleet defeated the dark Ebon Horde, peace appears restored — until Tomas Amets, commander of the elite Dirk Squadron, witnesses the murder of a mysterious alien. As rebellion stirs and trust begins to fracture, Amets must fight not only for survival but for justice itself.

For Luke, sci-fi has always been more than entertainment. Influenced by writers such as C.S. Lewis and Wayne Thomas Batson, he seeks to echo the beauty of God’s love through epic storytelling.

“This book is written for two audiences,” Luke explains. “I wrote to God to thank Him for His love and the sacrifice of His Son by retelling it in another form. And I wrote so that others might glimpse that love through the lens of adventure and imagination.”

He stresses that he isn’t out to preach, but rather to inspire. “I hope to engage readers with a thrilling story in an intricate universe. But if there’s one message I’d love them to take away, it’s this: hope is stronger than fear, love is stronger than hate, and even in the depths of space, you are never alone. There is a King who cares for you.”

The Horizon Events: A Veil is Torn, published by Ark House, is now available worldwide.

her name is grace

Her Name is Grace – A Powerful Memoir of Faith, Heritage, and Hope

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – In Her Name is Grace, Ingrid Herrmann invites readers into a deeply personal and historically rich journey—a sweeping memoir that spans generations, continents, and spiritual awakenings.

Blending intimate storytelling with the broader context of history, this compelling narrative traces Ingrid’s German ancestry, the legacy of the Hermannsburg Mission, and her family’s migration to South Africa—all while anchoring every chapter in a deep, unshakable Christian faith.

But this is more than a family memoir. It’s a profound exploration of God’s grace and sovereignty amid the ever-present tension between light and darkness. The book’s subtitle, The Battle of Two Kingdoms, hints at the spiritual conflict at the heart of Ingrid’s story—one that has played out across generations and continues to shape our world today.

What makes Her Name is Grace especially moving is Ingrid’s vulnerability and obedience to a calling placed on her heart decades ago. She shares how, more than 30 years ago, the Lord impressed upon her the need to write her story—not just for herself, but for readers who, like her, have walked through valleys and stood on mountaintops, wondering where God is in it all.

From historical upheavals and geopolitical intrigue to personal loss, mission work, and divine encounters, Ingrid’s testimony weaves together the “bigger picture” of God’s grace through time and space. Along the way, she reflects on the spiritual blindness that can deceive even well-meaning people—those caught in what she calls the “brooding darkness.” These moments, both heartbreaking and honest, become turning points of revelation and compassion.

At its core, Her Name is Grace offers a powerful message of hope—a reminder that the Kingdom of God is not just a distant promise, but a present reality. As Ingrid writes, the battle between two kingdoms is unfolding before our eyes, and yet God remains faithful. His mercies are new every morning. He walks with us through every trial, every loss, every joy. He is present in the smallest details of our lives.

Quoting Psalm 62, Ingrid proclaims: “In Christ alone our hope is found.” No matter the suffering, no matter the pain, no matter the wars or the rumors of wars—God is still God. The earth and everything in it still belong to Him.

As Ingrid continues to speak and share her story across various venues, her message remains consistent and clear: now is the time to awaken, to surrender, and to return to the One who holds all things together. Her Name is Grace, published by Ark House, is a heartfelt call to humility, faith, and perseverance—a timely book for readers seeking light in uncertain times.

gangland to guinea

From Gangland to God’s Work: A Journey of Redemption Across Continents

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – For years, Huw Donaldson was written off as one of New Zealand’s worst individuals. His world was one of gangs, chaos, violence, and constant brushes with the law. Raised in a good but short lived home in Canterbury, Huw’s path took him deep into the underworld of Christchurch’s motorcycle club scene. He was no stranger to the police holding cells from a young age, and violence became his currency. His story seemed destined for only one of two endings: life behind bars, or an early grave. But destiny had other plans.

Huw’s new book, Gangland to Guinea, is the gripping, unfiltered account of a life spiraling out of control, and the unimaginable twist that changed everything: an encounter with God that turned a feared criminal into a servant on the frontlines of mission work in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

A Life in the Shadows

“From Gangland New Zealand I came, but it was to West Africa, God’s hidden treasure, that I was headed to and this would be the staging point of God’s transformation on my life,” Huw stated.

The story unfolds in raw, brutal honesty. Huw takes readers inside the motorcycle club culture of Christchurch, a world hidden from the public eye, where violence was survival and loyalty was often sealed in blood. The book doesn’t shy away from the realities: the chaos, the brutality, the constant fear of when the next fight—or the next funeral—would come.

It’s not just a crime story; it’s a human story of searching for meaning in all the wrong places.

The Turning Point

After years of going backwards and forwards, progressing before stumbling again, Huw’s path crossed with something he never expected: the transformative power of Christ. What began in the shadows of a prison cell became the foundation of an entirely new life.

“When I was still in my very early twenties and facing a second term of imprisonment, I can recall feeling quite down on myself and the prospects of my future,” Huw said. “It was through reading about and hearing about the success stories of faith-filled people that had come from an equally disastrous background as myself that I was able to not only feel better about myself but also to have some belief in the idea of a successful future.

“Any person, which is nearly all of us, that has regrets, brokenness, heartbreak, or suffered through an existence that at some point they wished they could have changed, can take encouragement from this book. Hey, if God can help me make a life for myself, then he can do it for anyone.”

Huw’s encounter with God didn’t just change his outlook. It rewrote his destiny. Today, instead of running with gangs in Christchurch, he runs with a new mission: serving people in Sierra Leone, one of the poorest nations in the world.

From Christchurch to Sierra Leone

The second half of Gangland to Guinea reads like a completely different story—yet it’s the same man at the center. Readers follow Huw as he leaves behind the chaos of New Zealand’s gang scene to serve in West Africa. It’s here that his testimony takes on a global dimension: the same man once trapped by violence is now bringing hope and practical help to communities in need.

“I could imagine that this story is so incredible that it’s actually hard for most people to believe,” admits Huw. “But I can assure you it is real. And what is even more important than that, is that Jesus Christ and the God which the Bible talks about is also real. And if you are critical of that theory right now, then read this adventure and by the end of it, you will be open to the reality of Christ and how good He is.”

More Than a Memoir

Gangland to Guinea isn’t just another memoir. It’s a book that straddles genres: part gritty true-crime tale, part thriller, part faith testimony. It’s a story that grips readers with the rawness of its honesty, but also leaves them with something even more powerful—hope.

Huw explains. “For the one who wonders if it’s too late to change, for the skeptic, the believer, and everyone in between. I want people to know: if God could take me, someone once considered among New Zealand’s worst, and set me free, then no one is beyond His reach.”

Why This Book Matters

In a world where headlines are dominated by crime, violence, and broken lives, Gangland to Guinea offers something different: a reminder that transformation is possible. It’s a story that challenges stereotypes, raises questions about identity and purpose, and points to a hope far greater than self-help or second chances.

Readers will come away with more than just a gripping story. They’ll gain perspective. They’ll gain encouragement. And many will discover that redemption is not just possible—it’s powerful, and it’s available to anyone.

A Story You Can’t Put Down

At its core, Gangland to Guinea is about contrast: from gangland to mission field, from despair to hope, from prison walls to wide-open horizons. It’s the kind of story that makes readers pause and reflect on their own lives, and the lives of those around them.

In Huw’s words: “Gangland to Guinea isn’t just my story. It’s an invitation. To believe again in change, in purpose, and in the God who makes all things new.”

For anyone who loves a gripping true story, who’s searching for meaning, or who simply wants proof that no one is ever too far gone—this is a book you can’t afford to miss. Gangland to Guinea, published by Ark House, is available now—read it, share it, and discover a redemption story that might just change your life, or the life of someone you love.

Surviving the Hospital: Six Secrets Every Patient Should Know

Surviving the Hospital: How One Wife’s 35-Year Journey Sparked a Guide to Empower Patients Everywhere

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Gilbert, Arizona—Monday, September 22, 2025

Each year, thousands of patients enter hospitals unprepared for the complexities and risks of modern healthcare. With healthcare-acquired infections ranking among the leading causes of preventable hospital deaths and 7% of hospital admissions involving preventable adverse events, patients need more than hope—they need practical tools.

“Surviving the Hospital: Six Secrets Every Patient Should Know” by Val Barschaw arms patients and their families with essential strategies to transform from passive recipients into indispensable members of their healthcare teams.

Drawing on 35 years of hospital experience—including her husband’s decade-long wait for a heart transplant and 25+ years of post-transplant care—Barschaw shares hard-earned wisdom with deep empathy for others facing similar ordeals. Her personal journey, which included witnessing medication errors and unsanitary conditions even in top-rated facilities, fuels the practical guidance in this book.

The book’s September 9th release date holds special significance, falling during the 25th anniversary week of her husband Bill’s successful heart transplant on September 12th, making this both a celebration of survival and a mission to help others achieve better outcomes.

Packed with real-life case studies and actionable strategies, this book reveals six powerful “secrets” that can make the difference between confusion and confidence, vulnerability and empowerment. Readers will learn how to:

  • Research effectively and become curious about their condition
  • Create comprehensive medication lists that could prevent poisoning
  • Maintain cleanliness standards to avoid invisible killers like infections
  • Develop strategic plans with caregivers and advocates
  • Use prayer and emotional support as healing tools
  • Practice gratitude to enhance immune function and speed recovery

Recent Amazon Success: The book hit #1 New Release in Emergency Medicine within 48 hours of launch, along with multiple other top-10 rankings, proving the urgent need for this resource.

“When my husband was offered a blood thinner that could have caused him to bleed to death during surgery, and then later that same day was served food that negatively interacted with his medications, I realized that patients must become the last line of defense for their own safety,” said Barschaw.

Limited-Time Offer: “Surviving the Hospital” will be free and available for download on Amazon for 5 days, Tuesday, September 23 through September 27, 2025.

New Release, God, I’m Broken, Chronicles a Journey of Grief at the Death of a Best Friend

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – “As a society tries to suppress and hide the reality of death, it inevitably becomes less prepared for it. I, for one, want to be ready when it comes for me—and it will come for me, and you, and everyone you know, unless Jesus returns first,” writes Marshall Segal, president and CEO of desiringGod.org, in an article titled “Do You Want to Die Well?”

A new release, God, I’m Broken:Finding Hope and Comfort in Your Grief Journey could just as aptly have been titled How to Die Well. In this Redemption Press release, award-winning author Ann Griffiths chronicles the story of her friend’s diagnosis of bone cancer, the short months to her death, and the journey through grief both women traveled.

When her best friend and ministry partner died, Ann Griffiths was surprised by the raw grief that rolled over her. Friends called Ann and her next-door neighbor, Donna Inglis, “conjoined twins,” as they did everything together—travel, ministry, church, shopping. They’d met forty years earlier and had promised they’d be there for each other when the end came.

This forty-day devotional beautifully chronicles Donna’s final journey and Ann’s own journey of intense grief following her friend’s death. It shows us how to die well—with faith, humor, love, and hope in Christ for the future. No pat answers or typical solutions to grief, this is a deeply personal chronicle of losing a best friend yet finding joy in the process of letting go.

Griffiths processes her pain and the raw emotions she felt as she faced the loss. She says, “When someone we love leaves this earth, it’s as if we lose a precious treasure. As if all that remains is a deep, dark hole. We don’t know how we’ll survive the pain. Let alone how we’ll move forward without our loved one.”

But along with a recounting of the pain come words of encouragement and comfort centered in Christ from someone who has been there that will resonate with anyone experiencing the loss of bereavement. There was joy in the journey of these two women, one dying, one facing loss, that gives hope for something we all must face.

gideon's book

One Bible. Three lives. A journey of redemption spanning decades. This is Gideon’s Book

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Years ago, if someone had said she would one day write a full-length work of fiction, author Maureen Miller wouldn’t have believed it. In fact, when God whispered, “The Bible by the bed” in reference to a story He was stirring in her heart in 2007, she didn’t—arguing, “You’ve got to be kidding! I’m a nonfiction writer, and that’s how You’ve wired me.”

But one confirmation after another surprised her, and God’s echo simply wouldn’t cease. Then, when an elderly woman from Eden, North Carolina handed her a small pocket New Testament at a speaking engagement later that year, Maureen knew. God was serious.

What she didn’t know then, however, was that this story, later titled Gideon’s Book, would take nearly two decades to be born. “What I learned was to trust God’s timing, to rest in the truth that it would be finished ‘For such a time as this’ (Esther 4:14).”

Maureen began writing this dual timeline-tale in 2019, hitting send in June the following year when “everyone who wanted to write a book wrote a book,” she says with a chuckle. It was while she waited for edits she decided to throw herself into collaborative writing. “‘To hone my craft,’ as dear author-mentor Cecil Murphey encouraged me.” That’s when Maureen fell in love with this sort of teamwork-writing, covering a plethora of topics and genres.

It was during this season, too, Maureen realized she really had no idea how to write quality fiction. “And that’s when I knew I needed to start from scratch.”

It’s true, and in 2023, she began again—with fresh characters, new settings, and different plot points. “It’s actually an entirely different story,” Maureen says. “But it’s better. Much better, all for God’s glory.”

Gideon’s Book touches on themes of adoption, the sanctity of human life, and racial reconciliation. With thought-provoking discussion questions included, Gideon’s Book is tailored for book clubs and classrooms, encouraging readers to do what GB’s minor character Jonah Forney states, “All it takes is pullin’ up a chair” regarding having heartfelt conversations, even about difficult topics. “We can and should be able to do this,” Maureen says. “We’re too quick to feel offended rather than lean in to one another, to hear each other. We don’t have to agree, but can’t we at least listen with love?”

One thing Maureen admits. Writing Gideon’s Book has been a growing experience. “And not just as a writer of fiction either,” she laughs. “God has grown me, thickened my skin, so to speak. Because this story touches on sensitive topics, I know there are those who hate its message and, perhaps, me too. But I’ve grown to care more about what God thinks rather than what people think, which is a good thing.”

And what God thinks seems to be in her favor. In August, Gideon’s Book was awarded the Christian Market Book’s Contemporary Novel of 2025 at the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association’s annual conference near Atlanta. “I cried ugly tears,” Maureen admits. “But I pointed upward as I walked to receive my award. After all, I know—this story, it’s all God’s!”

Gideon’s Book is available on Amazon and at other major booksellers as well as at Redemption Press online.

the revelation mysteries

New Book The Revelation Mysteries is a Complete Study On End-Time Prophecy

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – NEW YORK / HOSANNA PUBLISHING HOUSE / September 11, 2025 – Over the past 55 years, the Christian community has been bombarded with new Bible versions at a rate of one translation per year.

As early as the 1970s, publishers began feeding the Church’s frenzy for revelation from God’s Word through mass production of new Bible translations. In the decades that followed, the number of versions pumped into the needle-riddled veins of the Church increased steadily with no end in sight.

While those in the pulpit size up their buffet of Bibles, they can pick and quote their brand of Christianity at will. As a result, our Christian heritage is steadily being eroded; and it may scarcely be recognized 100 years from today when religious leaders stand up and quote a paraphrase of a paraphrase from a paraphrase that was embraced by the Church of our day. Thus, Christianity Lost.

While other world religions appear to hold true to their sacred text, it appears the Christian community is allowing an unseen force to redefine its heritage. Does anyone care to imagine what would happen to the person in a Muslim country who claimed to have written a New Revised Version of the Quran or a person in Israel who attempted to teach from a New International Version of the Torah?

While here is presented two extremes, the Christian Church is at the other end of this spectrum. In that, the body of Christ appears to sit passively by as the Church, their culture, and their heritage are being slowly and methodically redefined.

In the book, The Revelation Mysteries – A Complete Study On End-Time Prophecy, the author expounds on endtime events from an unique biblical perspective. “I want readers to take away from reading my book,” the author says, “a sense of purpose…a redirection of priorities…if you will. I want every reader to understand the Book of Revelation is the only book in the Bible that promises blessings to the reader in both the beginning and the end of the book. I want every reader to experience these blessings.”

The Revelation Mysteries is a one-of-a-kind resource for anyone interested in end-time prophecy.

Do we need to pick a spot that’s removed from the hustle and bustle? Or can it be as simple as setting aside listening time wherever we may be?

A new picture book release, Listen to the Silence, by Marjean Brooks (Redemption Press), portrays what readers might discover when they remove themselves from the noise that constantly demands attention.

The story and illustrations reveal how to discover or create a quiet listening space in many different settings. Whether inside or outside, in the city or in the country, there are always opportunities to focus on the silence and listen to the sounds around us as well as in our own thoughts.

Using tranquil wording to match the title, this picture book explains how to create a quiet place and tune in to our inner and outer world. The result could be as simple as hearing the chirp of a cricket or as significant as discerning the whisper of God.

By listening to the silence (which isn’t really silent at all), we better equip ourselves to commune with God and nature and to hear the natural symphonies that make up our world. The author says, “The practice of intentional quiet needs to start early. My prayer is that this message will not only reach children, but the adults who read the story to them. Hopefully they will participate in the art of listening together.”
