New Book Candy The Rescue Dog is a Revelation of God’s Love and Guidance

If someone had told Deborah in 2020—while she was scouring the shelves of a Brisbane supermarket for a roll of toilet paper—that she would one day become a published author, she admits she would have laughed her mask right off. Writing a book was never on her “bucket list.” She had no desire, training, or even thought of becoming an author. But God had a very different plan—one she could not yet see.

Born in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia and later raised on a dairy farm near Gympie, Deborah grew up exploring the land on horseback and by foot. After her family moved to Brisbane, she gave her life to Christ as a teenager, a decision that would shape her journey forever. She went on to study Dentistry at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery while also pursuing her love of dance, earning a Teacher’s Diploma in Tap.

Though accomplished academically and artistically, Deborah often felt like she didn’t belong. Her strong Christian faith set her apart from peers and family. True and faithful friendships were difficult to find. She frequently wrestled with feelings of rejection, invisibility, and being a “square peg in a round hole.” Through it all, one truth remained—she could always trust her Heavenly Father.

What Deborah didn’t know was that God would use an unlikely companion to reveal the depths of His love: an unwanted rescue dog named Candy. Like Deborah, Candy carried scars from her past and often resisted confinement. Their bond became a mirror through which God showed Deborah His unconditional, personal love. When Candy passed away in 2021, Deborah received a profound heart revelation of God’s enduring love and was prompted to share the lessons she had learned.

The words “Write a book about it” would not leave her mind. To Deborah, the idea felt absurd—English was her weakest subject, and she had never been taught how to structure a sentence, let alone write an entire book. But just as God sent Aaron to help Moses, He placed an experienced writer in Deborah’s path to encourage, guide, and equip her. Over 18 months, with God’s constant provision and the Spirit’s guidance, Deborah completed Candy the Rescue Dog.

Through the frustrating yet transformative relationship with her four-legged friend, Deborah discovered profound truths about God’s character, faithfulness, and love. And as she wrote, she realized these lessons were not just for her—they were meant for anyone who has struggled with rejection, loneliness, or feelings of unworthiness.

Though initially content to keep the finished manuscript hidden away on her computer, Deborah once again heard God’s challenge: If you don’t even try to publish it, have you truly been obedient? Stepping out in faith, she pursued publishing—and today, her book is available for all who need encouragement and hope.

Away from writing, Deborah is a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and gardener. Married to her husband Paul since 1983, she delights in family life, line dancing, sewing, Mahjong, and bird photography. Together, they have four daughters and five grandchildren.

Candy the Rescue Dog is more than a story about a pet—it is a testimony of God’s unwavering love, guidance, and the unexpected ways He reveals His heart.

Respected scientist offers profound testimony of faith bridging science, art and spirituality

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – In The People of Pilgrim’s Progress: The Spiritual Journey to God of a Natural Scientist, Professor Shi-Ryong Park—a respected scientist and artist—offers a profound testimony of faith that bridges science, art, and spirituality.

As a natural scientist, Park has long grappled with the question, “How can one believe in an invisible God?” His answer is clear and compelling: “It is by drawing near to His intentions through divine wisdom, not the wisdom of the world.”

He reflects that before humanity even existed, when the universe began with the Big Bang, God had already planned to send Christ—taking on human flesh—to this small planet among countless stars. For Park, faith in Christ is nothing less than “the gift of life and salvation given to us through His Spirit.”

A life shaped by science and struggle

After first encountering Jesus in his youth, Park spent nearly 30 years leading research to restore the endangered oriental stork population. Yet his spiritual journey was marked by deep personal trials, most painfully through his daughter’s long struggle with alcoholism. Despite medical treatment, she could not find freedom, and Park, overwhelmed by despair, turned wholeheartedly to God in prayer.

During this season, he revisited John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress—a book he cherished in his youth—and began writing his own reflections, including the chapter “The Prison of Despair.”

A stunning fusion of art, science, and faith

In The People of Pilgrim’s Progress, Park reimagines Bunyan’s timeless allegory through delicate watercolors painted on traditional Korean paper. His artwork, paired with deeply personal reflections, brings Bunyan’s characters into a modern context while tracing his own journey through doubt, struggle, and renewal in Christ.

As a scientist, Park wrestled with faith amid skepticism, often challenged by figures like Darwin, Dawkins, and Wilson. Yet, like Bunyan’s Christian, he ultimately found redemption and rebirth. His reflections, shaped during daily climbs up Seoul’s Mount Inwang, unfold as meditations on life, death, and eternity.

This rare integration of science, faith, and art makes The People of Pilgrim’s Progress both a tribute to Bunyan’s enduring vision and a powerful contribution to contemporary Christian literature.

Who should read this book?
When asked who he hopes will read the book, Professor Park points to three groups:

Natural scientists without faith in Christ.
Park does not identify with creationism, yet he also believes evolution alone cannot explain the mystery of human origins. “A force within me, directed toward God, has taken root as life itself,” he writes.

Pastors and church leaders.
Park laments how many churches have become driven by money, prestige, and competition for positions, obscuring the true image of Christ who bore the cross. He hopes this book will call pastors and believers back to a life centered on Jesus.

Those who believe death is the end.
Park himself once doubted the resurrection. But through faith, he discovered that death is not the end, but a new beginning. “God is proving it to me now through the power of the Holy Spirit,” he testifies.

About the author
Professor Shi-Ryong Park is a renowned natural scientist and consultant for animal-related programs at KBS. He has published numerous works on natural science for general audiences, but The People of Pilgrim’s Progress is his first book to openly share his faith journey. Following the English edition, Korean and Japanese editions are expected soon.

Former “Blue Baby” Compares Physical Heart Defects to Spiritual Defects in New Release

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – In 2019, Johns Hopkins Hospital celebrated the seventy-fifth anniversary of its historic “blue baby” surgery.

“Until the day of that milestone blue baby operation, most infants and children with the heart defect died. This surgery was deemed a success, thanks to implantation of the new shunt, which increased blood flow, allowing enough of it to pass through the lungs and pick up more oxygen.”

Shannon McGee knows this topic from the inside out. She was a “blue baby” with a hole in her heart who had four surgeries before the age of nine to correct a congenital condition known as tetralogy of Fallot. In her debut book, Faith Beats: Growing Your Spiritual Heart Knowledge and Health (Redemption Press), McGee compares the four heart defects she was born with and the work of the surgeon’s hands to repair those defects to the defectiveness in our hearts and God’s perfect plan of redemption to restore our hearts back to Him.

Heart Beats reveals God’s original design and purpose of our spiritual heart, its congenital condition, our need for restoration, as well as the power of transformation and our eternal expectation.

Questions at the end of each chapter, a short exercise, and space for reflection will help the reader discover ways to better guard their heart health by examining them, filling them with the Word, exercising faith, and living a spiritual heart-healthy lifestyle.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Shannon McGee was born with tetralogy of Fallot in the infant decade of open-heart surgery in Pell City, Alabama, just miles away from UAB Hospital and pioneers in the field of open-heart surgery. She had four corrective operations before the age of nine. Since then she has lived a normal life, earned a bachelor’s in theology from the International College of Ministry, and is active in women’s ministry.

A wife, mother, and Nonna to eight grands, she loves to read, immerse herself in God’s Word, spend time with family, and nurture her love/hate relationship with golf.

Ark House Releases You Are Loved — A Testament of God’s Unfailing Grace

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – At 78 years old, retired principal and lifelong educator Nola Stacey never set out to become an author. Yet her newly released memoir, You Are Loved, is a moving story of faith, resilience, and the relentless love of God that has been with her from the very beginning.

What started as a lighthearted journal after surgery—scribbling about the frustrations of recovery restrictions—soon took a profound turn. As Nola faced moments of anxiety, depression, and deep grief, including the heartbreaking loss of her son to heroin addiction, writing became more than therapy. It became a way of uncovering the hidden thread of grace that had carried her through life’s hardest valleys.

Encouraged by her psychiatrist and later by a fellow author, Nola began piecing her memories together in chronological order. What emerged was not simply a personal history, but a powerful reminder that God’s hand is present even in the darkest of times.

“Looking back, I can see that God never let me go,” Nola reflects. “Even when I lashed out at Him, even when I thought life was unliveable, He was holding me close.”

Throughout her life—as a young teacher, a devoted wife, a mother navigating unimaginable loss, and now a grandmother and great-grandmother—Nola has witnessed both the fragility of life and the steady assurance of God’s love. Her journey illustrates that faith is not about rituals or perfection, but about recognizing and resting in the sacrifice of Christ, who makes eternal hope possible.

You Are Loved is more than a memoir; it is a gift to anyone wrestling with fear, loss, or questions of faith. It speaks directly to the heart of the reader: reminding them that they are seen, held, and loved by God—always.

This beautifully honest book will resonate with anyone seeking encouragement, healing, or a deeper understanding of God’s grace. As Nola herself says, “It was written with love to help people who weren’t coping with life and also who didn’t know God and how much He loved them.”

Whether you are walking through grief, battling anxiety, or simply in need of hope, You Are Loved is a gentle but powerful reminder: God’s love is constant, unconditional, and greater than we can imagine.

You Are Loved, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

New Devotional Offers Strength and Joy for Christian Educators Facing Classroom Challenges

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Gilbert, Arizona – Monday, August 25, 2025

Michelle Ruddell’s “From the Playground to the Battleground” will be available tomorrow, August 25, 2025 and ebook free to download for five days through August 30, 2025

Teaching today is more than lesson plans and parent conferences—it’s a battleground. In her new devotional, “From the Playground to the Battleground: Finding Joy and Strength in the Classroom” (Redemption Press, 2025), veteran teacher Michelle Ruddell equips Christian educators with Scripture, prayer, and real-life encouragement to thrive in both the joys and struggles of their calling.

With forty devotions written from the trenches of teaching, Ruddell provides a lifeline of perspective and hope:

  • Biblical encouragement tailored to educators
  • Prayers for daily classroom challenges
  • Practical reflections to carry joy home
  • Inspiration to rekindle passion for shaping young lives

“Because what you do matters. What you say matters. What you give matters. You matter,” Ruddell reminds.

A Lifeline for Weary Teachers

Ruddell speaks honestly about the pressures of modern education: “In a calling and career where we are teaching with one hand and protecting ourselves and our students with the other, how do we find joy?” Yet she also points teachers to God’s sustaining presence: “As you face the beginning of a new school year, remember it is more like a playground than a battleground—soak up that joy. Use it for strength. The battle is coming.”

Her blessing over educators captures the heart of the book: “May your paycheck stretch like loaves and fishes and your heart stay open to new ideas … May you reflect the light of Jesus no matter where he calls you.”

Michelle Ruddell’s paperback will be available on August 25, 2025; with the e-book free to download on Amazon for 5 days through August 30, 2025. “From the Playground to the Battleground” debuted to rave reviews! Here’s what just a couple of the reviewers have said:

Learn How You Can Find God in Every Step with Anita Backman’s Jottings on the Journey

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Every morning, rain, hail, or shine, Anita Backman walked with her cheeky little dog, Hugo. But those walks were more than just a daily routine—they were sacred moments of intentional prayer, honest conversations with God, and listening with an open heart. Out of those quiet, consistent steps came something extraordinary: Jottings on the Journey, a deeply personal devotional that invites readers to encounter God in the everyday.

This beautifully crafted collection of prayers, reflections, scripture meditations, and poetry is born from eleven years of Anita’s own faith journey—years marked not only by spiritual growth but also by profound struggles. Living with bipolar disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, an eating disorder, chronic pain, and toxic relationships, Anita’s story is one of resilience, authenticity, and hope. Her devotional does not shy away from life’s darkest valleys, but instead shines a light on the God who never lets go.

What makes Jottings on the Journey unique is its interactive design. Anita doesn’t just share her prayers and poetry—she invites you to join in. Each reflection creates space for you to:

Pray: Talk to God boldly and honestly, just as Anita has modeled.

Reflect: Ponder scripture alongside Anita’s meditations, including her personal study of Psalm 32.

Create: Write your own prayers, journal your thoughts, or even try your hand at poetry, using Anita’s raw and heartfelt verses as inspiration.

The devotional becomes more than words on a page—it transforms into your own prayer journal, a sacred space to meet God, wrestle with questions, and discover His presence in the midst of life’s highs and lows.

Anita’s authenticity is what makes this devotional so compelling. Her willingness to be vulnerable about her pain allows others to see that God is not only present in moments of triumph, but also in seasons of brokenness. Her words echo with compassion, courage, and above all, the reminder of a heavenly Father who loves deeply, heals tenderly, and has good plans for His children.

For anyone longing to deepen their prayer life, find encouragement in suffering, or simply experience a devotional that is as creative as it is heartfelt, Jottings on the Journey offers a refreshing and life-giving guide.

Published globally by Ark House, Jottings on the Journey is now available—ready to inspire, comfort, and walk with you as you embark on your own journey with God. To make contact with the author, click here.

Whirligigs in the Backyard

Whirligigs in the Backyard: A Coming-of-Age Story Across Cultures, Convictions, and Choices

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Beverley Jones was inspired to write Whirligigs in the Backyard to reach those who, like her, endured confusion, isolation, and cultural conflict during the often already turbulent teenage years.

Beverley’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. She grew up in a foreign land, caught between cultures and belief systems. Her family immigrated to Australia from Southeast Asia in the wake of Asia’s colonial collapse. With both English and Asian heritage her father believed the region was no longer safe for people of European descent.

In Australia, the family stood out. People were shocked to discover they spoke fluent English. Strangers would stop the children on the street to exclaim about their “beautiful black eyes and silky brown skin.” No one knew what race they were because of how they looked. Nor did it matter because as Beverley says, “People just made up their minds based on the colour of our skin.”

Torn between love and loyalty to her family, Beverley clung to the belief that her family’s religion was the only true faith – until she discovered others viewed it as a cult. Searching for a sense of belonging, she dreamed of returning home – to her birthplace, hoping it would be where she might finally fit in.

At age 14, Beverley found herself deeply influenced by the lyrics of the Sixties – songs that questioned authority, celebrated sexual liberation, and demanded social change. The music changed everything, and Beverley found herself caught up in the social and music revolution that had been sweeping the Western world. “So much so,” Beverley recalls, “From the dawn of my second year in high school, everything I did, or didn’t do, caused controversy.” Fueled by this awakening and with nothing left to lose, she made a bold decision to jump into the world offered by the music.

In this raw and unfiltered memoir, Beverley shares her rollercoaster journey of self-discovery which begins in the suburban outskirts of western Sydney, where social, racial, and religious isolation left her feeling deeply trapped. Her story spans her teenage years during which she struggles to break free from a controlling religious group, dives headfirst into the counterculture of the times, and confronts the racial confusion that defined her family. Beverley’s quest lays bare the vulnerability of a young girl making adult decisions far too soon – and the risks she was prepared to take in pursuit of freedom and identity.

Will Beverley ever find her way home? And what does home really mean when your roots are entangled. The twists and turns in her story will keep you guessing about what influences her decisions, and what path she follows in her quest for self-discovery and belonging.

If you’ve ever questioned the choices you made in your youth, or still carry unanswered questions from that time, Beverley’s story is a must-read. Whirligigs in the Backyard, published by Ark House, is now available globally. To make contact with the author, click here.

deep times with god

Discover a Life of Faith and Miracles in Deep Times with God

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – The Christian life is one of faith—a walk that often runs counter to the values and direction of the world around us. While society places its trust in wealth, status, and possessions, the believer rests in the hands of God. Ironically, what many may see as uncertainty is in fact the safest and most secure place we can be—held by the Creator Himself.

So how do we live a life of faith that endures through trials, temptations, and hardships? Deep Times With God is a powerful new book by Dr. Charles Makoundi that answers this very question. In it, he shares how God aligns our hearts and minds with His purposes, and how we can walk with Him in victory—even in the midst of life’s storms.

A Life Touched by the Supernatural

Dr. Makoundi’s story begins in Africa, where he experienced the miraculous hand of God from a young age. At just two years old, Charles nearly drowned after falling headfirst into a bucket of water. Unable to lift himself out, he was saved by a man who appeared seemingly from nowhere—an angel, as Charles believes.

Years later, during a civil war in the Congo, Charles was kidnapped by unidentified armed men. While suffering mistreatment, a stranger intervened, advocating for his release—another divine intervention that saved his life.

A Journey of Faith and Calling

Now a permanent resident of Tasmania, Australia, Dr. Makoundi holds a PhD in Economic Geology from the University of Tasmania and a Diploma in Cross-Cultural Ministry. He is widely recognized for his prophetic ministry. Alongside his wife, he has served as a lead pastor and missionary, founding Jesus Power Ministry International in Malaysia before moving to Australia in 2010.

His spiritual journey was shaped by early hardships, including the death of his biological father when he was just 14. Wrestling with questions about God’s existence, Charles eventually found hope and identity in a God who, he discovered, is both powerful and deeply personal.

A Mission Powered by Faith

As a young missionary, Charles left Africa with his wife and only $210 to their name. They relocated to Malaysia by faith, where they served for 10 and half years. Despite having no scholarship, Charles completed a master’s degree by research, trusting God to supply the needed finances—another testimony of divine provision.

A Message of Hope for Every Believer

In Deep Times with God, readers are taken on an inspiring journey that shows how God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. Through real-life stories, practical insights, and spiritual wisdom, the book offers tools for living a victorious Christian life.

Readers will discover how God’s love, healing, guidance, and comfort are available to anyone who seeks Him. If you struggle with comparison, anxiety, fear, or uncertainty, this book offers hope and direction.

Deep Times with God will help you:

  • Deepen your hunger for God
  • Grow in your spiritual journey
  • Understand God’s character in a new and personal way

Charles shares, “I am now a new creature, transformed by the power of God.” Are you ready to be transformed too? God’s plan for your life is not a half-measure—He desires to shape, elevate, and use you for His glory. All He asks is that you spend time with Him.

Deep Times with God, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

Christian Aid Worker’s Memoir a Gripping Story with Universal Life Lessons

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – It’s your first time overseas. You arrive in Samoa—nervous, naïve, and unprepared for what lies ahead. Two weeks later, Cyclone Ofa strikes, devastating everything around you: homes, roads, crops, power lines, and water supplies.

Instead of learning the language as planned, you’re cooking over a campfire, collecting spring water, and rationing dwindling food supplies. What began as a two year aid program becomes a crash course in survival—and in Samoan living.

ENCOUNTER: A Journey into Chaos, Culture and Compassion is the true story of Ian Reilly and his wife Heather, who volunteer to teach in a remote Samoan school. When disaster hits a country already among the world’s least developed, the Reillys find themselves thrust into a life far beyond their expectations—marked by both hardship, struggle and personal transformation.

In the aftermath of Cyclone Ofa, they face the mountainous struggle of rebuilding while adapting to an alien culture. They learn to de-husk coconuts and cook with coconut cream, painfully sit cross-legged for hours on concrete floors, and to avoid offending people by introducing them, because in Samoa it’s considered bad manners.

They often walk long distances down dusty mountain roads, or travel in pickup trucks that frequently break down, and wait for buses that may never come.  But even more confronting than the physical challenges is the cultural upheaval—the feeling of living on shifting sand, in a fishbowl where every action is observed, discussed and judged.

Expecting a peaceful tropical escape, they instead face an intense rollercoaster of heat, working by candlelight, comedy, conflict, and tragedy. Samoa reveals itself as a land of sharp contrasts: stunning beauty and ugly violence, simple communities supported by complex relationships, , and happiness in the face of trauma.

Through this raw, immersive journey, the Reillys discover the vast gap between visiting a culture and truly living within it. With unflinching honesty, ENCOUNTER explores the tension of navigating cultural obligations, hierarchical traditions, and life-shaping experiences. Their assumptions—about justice, truth, good and evil, poverty, development, and even their own faith—are stripped back and re-examined. In doing so, readers are invited to reflect on their own cultural lenses, especially in a time when Western society is itself wrestling with rapid cultural change.

ENCOUNTER is essential reading for anyone involved in cross-cultural work—whether overseas or within diverse communities at home. It’s a gripping, deeply human story that doesn’t preach but invites. Non-Christians will find an engaging narrative that subtly reveals a Christian worldview through lived experience, while believers will be both challenged and encouraged in their faith.

As Ian Reilly’s debut work, ENCOUNTER covers just the first chapter of his Samoan adventure, with more stories to come. The experience left an indelible mark on him, shaping his path as an engineer, tech entrepreneur, international consultant, and father. Now, years later, he shares this story not only to recount an unforgettable journey, but to spark deeper conversations about truth, meaning, and the call to compassion in a complex world.

About the author
Ian Reilly has been at times a design engineer, teacher, international volunteer and technology consultant, successful entrepreneur featured in Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and The Times.  He now devotes his time writing, painting and drawing, speaking, mentoring and supporting local church ministries. He hopes ENCOUNTER will enrich reader’s lives with beauty, goodness and truth. (www.ianreilly.com.au)
