20 Life Lessons for New Christians

Introducing the perfect companion for Christians beginning their journey of faith

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Starting the journey of faith is one that established Christians often take for granted. But for those walking into this new world, once they are on their own and trying to navigate the next steps, it can be a confusing new world.

20 Life Lessons for New Christians, however, is the perfect companion for anyone beginning their life as a Christian. It is a truly unique book offering practical guidance, biblical wisdom, and heartfelt encouragement to help both new and established Christians grow in their relationship with God.

Whether you’re new to Christianity, or you’re a long-time Christian needing some encouragement, 20 Life Lessons for New Christians is the perfect guide.

“When I first became a Christian, I remember feeling excited, but also overwhelmed”, author Chathuni Palaketiyage stated. “I had so many questions, doubts, and struggles that I didn’t expect. Over time, I realised that many new believers go through the same experience—wondering if they’re doing things right, struggling with old habits, and feeling like they’re not growing fast enough.”

“Accordingly, I wrote 20 Life Lessons for New Christians to offer encouragement, wisdom, and biblical guidance to help others navigate the early stages of their faith journey.”

Having not been a lifelong Christian, Chathuni became a little stuck in navigating the next steps. “I didn’t grow up Christian; my entire family is Buddhist and so I grew up knowing nothing about Christianity,” she states.

“I went to a Christian high school, and had Christian Studies classes where I first learnt about Jesus. During the COVID-19 lockdowns in Melbourne in 2020, I started reading the Bible, which led me to become a Christian.”

Navigating the next steps became the challenge, and hence her desire to write a book that could help others with a smoother transition than the one she faced.

This remarkable new book will help both new and long standing Christians discover:

  • Tips and advice on what it’s like to live the Christian life
  • Refreshment for older Christians who may be a little stale in their faith
  • Helpful tips for new Christians who don’t know how to start

“My hope is that this book will remind new believers that they’re not alone and that growth takes time, but God is always at work in their lives,” she says.

From understanding God’s love and grace, to navigating challenges like doubt, forgiveness, and living out your faith in everyday life, each chapter provides a valuable life lesson rooted in Scripture. Readers will learn how to build a strong foundation for their faith, experience the joy of walking with Christ, and discover how to live with purpose and hope in today’s world.

With relatable stories, thought-provoking reflections, and actionable steps, 20 Life Lessons for New Christians will inspire and equip new believers to embrace their faith journey with confidence. This book isn’t just about surviving as a new Christian—it’s about thriving in the abundant life Jesus offers.

If you’re ready to deepen your faith, strengthen your walk with God, and find direction for your spiritual journey, this book is your guide to experiencing the fullness of life in Christ. Start your faith journey with confidence and hope—God’s best for you is yet to come.

20 Life Lessons for New Christians, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

5 Stars Short daily readings but packed full of caring.
Only a few chapters in and I’m already taking time to be still and listen for God’s presence. I don’t want to do one chapter a day….one chapter to start my morning then another at night to help settle all the crazyness of the day.

Forsythe

Michigan Exoneree Returns to Prison on His Own Terms

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Dr. Marvin Cotton Jr. Hosts Motivational Event at Thumb Correctional Facility to Bring Hope to Inmates.

Lapeer, Michigan – When Dr. Marvin Cotton Jr., a Michigan exoneree and Detroit native, left prison in 2020 he vowed never to return—at least not as a resident. Instead of fighting for injustice behind bars like he once did, he now has the opportunity to use his voice and his story to advocate for men just like him. Cotton was exonerated on October 1, 2020 after being wrongfully convicted and serving 19 years, 7 months, and 12 days in the Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC).

His release was the result of an extensive investigation by the Wayne County Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU), created in 2018 to address wrongful convictions.

Cotton is one of the dozens of men in Michigan who has been wrongfully convicted and exonerated by the CIU in the last seven years.  Since returning to society, he has focused on finding unique ways to advocate for others who have been wrongfully convicted. Understanding the important role that community support plays in the lives of returning citizens, Cotton has made it his mission to find ways to uplift those who are still fighting for their freedom.

Amongst his many accomplishments to date, Cotton has published his first bestselling book, “Better Not Broken: An Optimistic Guide to Overcoming Pain and Leveraging Life’s Opportunities” and founded the Better Not Broken Community Development Corporation.

On Saturday, March 8, Cotton visited Thumb Correctional Facility (TCF) to encourage the residents and to provide resources to help them overcome mental and emotional barriers as they prepare to return to their communities.

The motivational event titled, “Staying Positive and Engaged While in Prison”, included a keynote address by Cotton, a question-and-answer session, and a special recognition segment honoring nine men from the facility who have made admirable contributions to help improve the lives of others and their communities. The voluntary event was well attended, drawing over 125 men.

The event was a collaborative effort of TCF’s administration (including the prison warden, assistant deputy warden of programs, and the special activities director), Cotton and the TCF residents. Robert T. Hinds, a juvenile lifer who was wrongfully convicted in 2002 and has maintained his innocence for almost 24 years, helped spearhead the event by working with the TCF staff, fellow inmates, and Cotton’s administrative team to help organize the logistics and ensure that the event was open to the entire general population of men at the facility. Hinds says that the desired outcome of the event was for the men to feel inspired after hearing Cotton’s story of redemption.

robert cotton

“I’ve had to overcome a lot of things in my life and to mature. It wasn’t easy, but I put in the work, and I have been blessed to have accomplished a lot, even while fighting for justice from behind these bars,” said Hinds. “I know if it is possible for me to overcome and succeed, so can these other men.”

TCF is one of the few correctional facilities in Michigan that has a thriving and expansive college program where the staff promotes higher education and reform. As a result, the administration’s commitment to provide valuable educational opportunities continues to positively impact the residents and the culture at TCF.

According to Hinds and Cotton, the challenges and bureaucracy that can come with doing positive work inside of prison can be overwhelming, but they both agreed that the work is still worth doing.

They also shared that while many of the men who are inside serving life and/or long indeterminate sentences have helped rebuild the confidence and spirits of men who have already been released back into the community, their contributions to those individuals’ transformation and its impact on society is often unacknowledged.

Hinds said that while organizing the event with Cotton, he was able to share the stories of nine men at TCF who regularly sacrifice their time and energy volunteering inside the facility to positively influence others. Those men range from writers, mentors, facilitators, college graduates to leaders in their faith communities.

One of the men who Hinds mentioned was Jerry Riley.  Riley, a youthful offender who was 19 years old at the time of the offense he was convicted for and is awaiting the Michigan Supreme Court decision in People v. Czarnecki, said that he is prayerful he will be resentenced at that time.

When Hinds mentioned Riley’s name to Cotton, Cotton said  that he was pleasantly surprised because he and Riley were old acquaintances. In fact, Riley was the man who helped Cotton develop his writing skills during his early attempts at writing stories. Cotton said that he was impressed that Riley had remained consistent doing positive work over the years.

“Jerry Riley is a great example of servant leadership,” said Hinds, “I have had conversations with Jerry about Dr. Cotton before and he never mentioned that he played a role in him learning how to write stories. This was a testament to me that his heart is in the right place as he is doing the work that he does.”

During the motivational event, Cotton recognized the work of several other men whose stories of sacrifice and selflessness were shared with him by Hinds in an effort to highlight their personal growth and service inside the prison. Cotton not only acknowledged the men personally, but he also made an attempt to provide each man with a certificate from his organization.

Determined to leave an impression of hope on the residents’ hearts and minds, and to remind them that they are not forgotten, Cotton says that he chose to recite the powerful words of Nelson Mandela, “To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”

During his keynote address, he also reflected on when he was in prison and there was a lack of community resources and volunteers to help with the initiatives that he wanted to introduce inside. Now that he is free, Cotton said that he is determined to use his voice to make a difference.

The event also included a robust question-and-answer segment, where the leaders of the event and the general population were invited to ask questions, many of which were centered around Cotton’s personal journey and experiences and the overall state of the justice system. One attendee commented that, “It was good to hear from someone who has actually experienced being sentenced to life in prison and being cleared.”

Cotton said that his vision is to work with the men inside so that they can overcome the pain and trauma that they may have experienced, develop professional tools and access the community resources needed so that they can overcome their personal struggles.

“It’s imperative that the men inside start to leverage opportunities now and find creative ways to get involved doing positive work before they leave prison,” said Cotton. “If the men who have influence use their voices productively, they can make a difference in someone’s life by opening up their minds and teaching them a new way to live.”

Cotton also expressed his gratitude for Hinds’ influential and strategic leadership in successfully pulling all the men together for a positive purpose.

“This event would not have been possible if my team (Freddie Nash, Robert Harrington-Bey, and David Wheetley) did not work collectively using our resources and influence,” Hinds said.

Randal LeFevre, an inmate at TCF, attended the event and said that Cotton was the most inspiring speaker he had heard in his 27 years of being in prison. “His ability to network and connect with people was impressive and a lot of what he shared helped me to put his vision in perspective.”

kingdom leadership

New book aims to develop effective leaders for kingdom initiatives

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – While those in Christian leadership need to understand the basic principles of business, there are elements of leadership that are unique to believers.

In his new book, Kingdom Leadership: Developing Effective Leaders for the Kingdom of Heaven, Nathan Porter has used his years of experience to deliver Christian leaders with the tools they need to not only be successful in their field, but to be able to bring Godly principles into their lives.

Nathan has dedicated many years to studying and reading about leadership, both through formal education in his MBA program, and as part of his personal journey of growth. This includes in his current role as a CEO, where leadership can literally make or break an organization.

Over time, he noticed a significant disconnect between the leadership principles taught in the world and what he believed God was revealing to him. He recognized that while worldly leadership often focuses on power, position, and influence, the leadership God calls us to is rooted in humility, servanthood, and aligning with His will.

After receiving a profound revelation from God through His word, Nathan gained a deeper and clearer understanding of the stark contrast between worldly leadership and Kingdom Leadership—an approach that calls us to lead not for our own gain, but for God’s glory and the service of others.

This powerful revelation sparked a deep desire in Nathan, an experienced leader, to share what he had learned. He was inspired to write this book with the aim of helping others discern the difference between the worldly concept of leadership, and the transformative leadership God desires for each of us to embrace and live out in our daily lives.

Through this work, Nathan hopes to guide Christians in embracing a leadership style that reflects God’s heart and fulfills His purpose for their lives.

Kingdom Leadership: Developing Effective Leaders for the Kingdom of Heaven invites readers on a transformative journey into the heart of leadership through the lens of the Kingdom of Heaven. In a crowded field of leadership literature, this book offers a unique perspective rooted in biblical principles and timeless wisdom.

Through exploration of scriptural-based concepts, Nathan uncovers the intrinsic value and potential within each individual as a Kingdom leader. Comparing Kingdom leadership to historical leadership concepts of influential figures, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the difference in leadership dynamics. This book is not just a reflection of his journey, but a calling to share God’s truth with others in a deeper and more expansive way.

Nathan has built a diverse career in both national and international roles, which has provided him with the opportunity to observe leadership practices across the globe. Through his experiences, he has gained insight into how leadership concepts and functions vary depending on cultural backgrounds and individual perceptions of what it means to be a leader.

Nathan has worked with and for global entities, including property development and construction conglomerates, world banks, and international investors.

In addition to his corporate experience, Nathan also works with an international non-governmental organization focused on peace-building projects in conflict-affected areas of Myanmar. He has served as a Director and Chairperson of the in-country organization and currently holds the position of Director and CEO of the Australian branch.

Nathan’s academic background includes formal studies, with a Bachelor of Business majoring in Finance, and a Master of Business Administration with a specialization in Leadership. These experiences have equipped him with a broad and nuanced understanding of leadership, both in theory and in practice.

This is Nathan’s first book, a project that has been years in the making. It all started when he felt a strong inspiration from God to write down the insights and revelations God had been showing him. What initially began as personal reflections soon developed into teaching notes designed to encourage and uplift those in his church, sharing the wisdom God had imparted to him.

As Nathan continued to reflect on these revelations, the notes grew in depth and substance, eventually expanding into the work you see today.

Throughout this process, Nathan has felt a continuous sense of divine inspiration, guided by the Holy Spirit, to refine and articulate his thoughts in a way that would help others understand and embrace the message God has placed on his heart.

These varied experiences, along with the revelation Nathan received from God, have profoundly shaped his understanding of the significance of Kingdom Leadership and its role in guiding others toward God’s will.

The book challenges readers to shift their mindset, moving away from conventional worldly views of leadership and embracing the divine blueprint God has laid out for His people to live and lead by. Nathan carefully breaks down how our thoughts shape our beliefs, which in turn influence our convictions. He explains how these internal factors directly impact our attitudes, perceptions, and behaviors—particularly in our understanding of leadership. This process of transformation is crucial for anyone seeking to lead as God intended.

Readers will gain practical insights into how to apply Kingdom Leadership in every area of their lives: from personal relationships to professional endeavors. Nathan’s approach goes beyond the typical Christian leadership books by analyzing how common leadership structures, taught by the world, influence even the operations of the Church.

He sheds light on how these worldly structures can sometimes divert the Church from its true calling and mission, providing a thought-provoking perspective on how we are meant to operate as leaders in God’s Kingdom.

Additionally, Nathan addresses the personal growth needed for Christians to be effective leaders in God’s Kingdom. He identifies key areas of a believer’s life that require development to reflect the fruit of the Spirit and the character of Christ. Through this, the book offers practical wisdom on how to align one’s leadership with God’s will, equipping readers to lead with integrity, humility, and purpose.

Ultimately, it helps readers understand how to embody the type of leadership that not only serves God’s Kingdom but also reflects His love, justice, and truth in a world that desperately needs it.

Designed to challenge and encourage, Kingdom Leadership helps readers move from the belief that leadership is something reserved for a few, to fully embracing the truth that they are all called to lead. It inspires readers to recognize that leadership is not just about holding a title or occupying a position of authority, but about living out a calling that touches every area of their lives.

By re-framing leadership in this way, Nathan’s book encourages readers to shift their perspective and realize that they have the ability to lead through the simple, everyday actions that reflect Christ’s love. This leadership is not about seeking recognition, but about living in such a way that others are drawn to God’s truth and love through their example.

The book empowers readers to live out their calling, no matter their circumstances, knowing that leadership is found in service and that God equips each of us to lead with grace and humility in every sphere of life.

Whether you’re just beginning to recognize your leadership potential or you’re already on the path to living out your calling, Kingdom Leadership will inspire you to lead with purpose, grounded in God’s truth, and empowered by His Spirit. It’s an invitation for all believers to step up and become the leaders God intended them to be, fully equipped to fulfill His will on earth.

Kingdom Leadership will help readers embrace a new perspective, elevate their leadership, and make a lasting impact in their spheres of influence for the Kingdom of Heaven. Kingdom Leadership, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

New book challenges leaders to finish well in a world where many fall short

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Dinah Lee Hodgson’s “The Uncommon Leader” will be available tomorrow March 18, 2025 and ebook free to download for five days through March 22, 2025.

Statistics reveal a sobering truth: Only one in three leaders will finish their life journey well, fulfilling their purpose with excellence. Many will stumble, and others will falter completely. Why? And more importantly, how can today’s leaders defy the odds?

In her powerful new book, “The Uncommon Leader: Following God’s Plan through Process, Person, and Power to Finish Well” (Redemption Press), Dinah Lee Hodgson provides a roadmap for leaders who want to rise above the norm and walk in their God-ordained calling with strength, integrity, and endurance.

Through engaging stories, biblical insights, and practical reflection exercises, Hodgson unpacks:

  • God’s process for shaping and refining leaders,
  • The necessity of following Christ’s leadership model and relying on the Holy Spirit, and
  • The enemy’s tactics to derail a leader’s life—and how to overcome them.

Perfect for pastors, ministry leaders, business executives, and influencers at any level, “The Uncommon Leader” is more than a leadership book—it’s a challenge to embrace the process, lean into God’s power, and lead with lasting impact to the finish line.

Dinah Lee Hodgson’s “The Uncommon Leader” paperback will be available on Tuesday, March 18; with the e-book free to download on Amazon for 5 days, Tuesday, March 18 through March 22, 2025. “The Uncommon Leader” debuted to rave reviews! Here’s what just a couple of the reviewers have said:

5 Stars Experienced some cognitive dissonance uprooting false leadership concepts

I was tremendously blessed by this book and its insights. I will admit I experienced a little bit of cognitive dissonance, uprooting false concepts about leadership that were taught to me in Business School in my early 20s. I was encouraged by the freedom we have in Christ as leaders if we cling to His will and plan instead of ours. The part about healing childhood traumas and allowing self care hit home as well. I’m a preacher’s kid  and have seen how damaging it can be when leaders don’t do their own healing work. Now, as a leader myself, I will apply the lessons in this book and aim to finish well. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is part of a Christian ministry, even if you yourself don’t hold the “leader” position. As you will learn, you don’t have to have an official position to influence and lead. Or like myself, you may be a leader in a secular job trying to honor the Lord in how you lead your team.

S-POW

5 Stars – Self-reflection and Sacrifice Required
Hodgson asks the question “What is the goal pushing you forward?” She posits that many leaders, including those in the Church, actually have fame and power as their goal, rather than the proper aim of Godly success, which seeks the success of others rather than oneself. She advises that the uncommon leader will run from the lure of abusing their power and live in a way that emulates the rubric Jesus set … In God’s kingdom, finishing strong looks like lifting others up while you earn Jesus-style calloused hands …

New devotional book addresses unique challenges facing dispatchers

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – With over twenty years of experience as a retired Public Safety Dispatcher, Elizabeth Abshire strives to assist fellow dispatchers in finding moments of peace during their daily routines.

She has penned a devotional specifically for dispatchers and it is available for purchase in time for National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week (NPSTW). Its title is “I Hear Voices; Devotions for Dispatchers.”

In her acknowledgements, Elizabeth states, “I am so grateful to my friends and former colleagues who have entrusted me with their stories. They are real heroes! They have been able to walk through these events and come out on the other side with a deeper relationship to their Savior, and they have shared these stories in the hope they will make a difference in your own story.”

“Elizabeth Abshire’s I Hear Voices, is a powerful and deeply personal reflection on the unique challenges faced by first responders—particularly dispatchers—whose unseen sacrifices often go unrecognized. Through poignant storytelling and heartfelt debriefs, Abshire captures the camaraderie, resilience, and emotional toll that come with serving in law enforcement.

Her stories, such as the Number Two No Cheese, where an officer’s simple act of kindness made all the difference or the struggle of transitioning from the chaos of duty to the demands of home life, resonate deeply with anyone who has worn the badge or answered the call.

The book serves as both a tribute to the often-overlooked dispatchers who keep us safe and a reminder that small acts of support—whether a meal, a break, or a moment of understanding—can have a profound impact.

I highly recommend this book to officers, dispatchers, and anyone seeking to understand the unbreakable bond between those who serve. It is a testament to the strength of our profession and the importance of taking care of one another. I Hear Voices, is more than a collection of stories—it’s a call to remember the humanity behind the headset and the badge.”

By Chief Casey J. Day, Fortuna Police Department

This book will make a great gift for anyone in Public Safety, especially those who literally answer the call!

It is available for sale on Amazon, in the Kindle Store, or directly from the author at https://restoredandblessed.etsy.com/listing/1869567186 with a 25% discount by using the code NPSTW25 at checkout.

The Modern Dilemma of Faith: Religious Transformation and Regulatory Challenges

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – In this era of transformation and challenges, religion, as a significant social force, has exhibited diversified and complex characteristics in its development. When religious scandals trigger public outcry, we must not remain confined to shallow moral condemnation.

Such storms act like a scalpel, dissecting the systemic corruption within American religious institutions, where capitalist logic is reshaping sacred spaces.

The “marketization of faith” predicted by sociologist of religion Rodney Stark is becoming a reality. According to Pew Research Center data, 63% of global religious organizations have adopted corporate operational models over the past decade, with “religious GDP” growing at an annual rate of 8.4%.

Capital has quietly rewritten the foundational code of belief. As the global religious market surpasses $1.5 trillion, crises of faith loom in three dimensions: regulatory mechanisms, power constraints, and legal frameworks. Some religious institutions and individuals exploit religion as a profit-making tool, accumulating wealth while deviating from its essence.

Regulatory Failures: Systemic Vulnerabilities
Under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, religious organizations are exempt from disclosing financial details, rendering over 350,000 American religious groups de facto “financial black boxes.” A 2023 Brookings Institution report reveals that church-affiliated enterprises evade over $4.4 billion in taxes annually, with only 12% of religious organizations undergoing third-party financial audits.

According to the Department of Justice’s crime statistics, a mere 15% of religiously linked sexual abuse cases enter judicial proceedings. Church-owned properties account for 62% of nonprofit real estate assets in the U.S. but contribute only 0.3% in property taxes. For instance, Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York, frequently straddles the line between legal permissibility and ethical controversy.

While transferring funds from the Milwaukee Archdiocese fell within his legal authority as archbishop, it was widely perceived as an intentional maneuver to obstruct victim compensation claims—a technical exploitation of legal loopholes under religious tax-exempt status.

Power Unchecked: Breeding Grounds for Abuse
A New York Times investigation found that conviction rates for religious leaders involved in sexual abuse are less than one-fifth of those for the general population. In 34 states, religious organizations remain exempt from child protection background checks, enabling many bishops to evade accountability due to systemic regulatory gaps. The First Amendment has become a shield for wrongdoing.

Timothy Michael Dolan’s empire is no anomaly but a symptom of a broader institutional malaise. As early as July 3, 2013, a New York Times article titled Cardinal Dolan and the Sex Abuse Scandal reported that Dolan sought to protect church assets from claims by clergy abuse victims, even offering $10,000 bribes to accused priests to resign voluntarily.

Victims of abuse face legal barriers: Arkansas’s Religious Arbitration Priority Act forces cases into internal church proceedings, clergy records are protected under Pastoral Privacy Regulations, and church-hired psychological consultants often issue “plaintiff memory distortion” assessments. This systemic failure results in judicial intervention in less than 4% of minor abuse cases within religious institutions (National Children’s Rights Coalition).

Legislative Gaps: Between Disenchantment and Re-enchantment
Legal blind spots and governance challenges in American religious ecosystems are deeply rooted in the First Amendment of 1791. While this tradition of liberty fosters pluralistic faith communities, it also creates regulatory gray zones.

A vacuum of accountability and intense commercialization have turned the $1.5 trillion religious market into a revolving door of interests. Five members of the Congressional Religious Freedom Committee simultaneously serve as advisors to church lobbying groups. Ivy League divinity schools award “Ethical Leadership” honors to religious figures in exchange for donations, while media outlets frame scandals as “persecution of Christianity.”

The close ties between religious leaders and politicians—often at odds with doctrinal principles—raise questions: Is this political coercion or religious degradation? Religious freedom litigation constitutes 17% of constitutional cases (U.S. Supreme Court data), with over 2,000 judicial interpretations expanding the concept of “religious liberty.”

Confronting systemic crises, nations are exploring solutions to curb further deterioration. Germany enforces a Religious Transparency Act mandating disclosure of funds exceeding €500,000. South Korea implements a religious group credit rating system incorporating abuse records and financial violations. Brazil’s “Street Liberation Theology” movement rebuilds faith through community solidarity.

Scholars propose reforms to address escalating complexities: establishing a three-tier risk assessment system for religious organizations to monitor cross-border fund flows, revising IRS Form 990 to mandate disclosure of executive compensation and related transactions, amending the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) to exclude criminal investigations from religious immunity, and forming cross-departmental religious oversight committees to dismantle regulatory voids.

As the sociologist of religion Peter Berger observed, “True religious freedom is the art of dancing within the shackles of the rule of law.” On this path to reform, both legislative wisdom and the rational vigilance of every believer are indispensable.
