gospel blaze in borneo

Missionary to Borneo’s new biography will inspire you to search your talents for the Kingdom

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Jim Ward’s fascinating biography will inspire Christians across the globe to look into their own lives and see what talents they may have for the Kingdom. Becoming a missionary may only be for a select few, but in Jim’s case, it is hardly surprising.

Jim is the son of pioneer missionaries of the Borneo Evangelical Mission, James and Laura Ward, who, during the early 1950’s, worked in the rugged interior of Sabah, near Ranau.

Jim’s remarkable new book, Gospel Blaze in Borneo, sparks into his fascinating life by exploring the miraculous work of God’s Spirit in bringing a whole people out of subsistence, animistic practices, within just a few generations, to know and love the Lord Jesus and establish viable settlements like Bonkhud.

In 1936 an exploratory trip discovered that the Dusun tribes living in isolated long house groups knew very little of who Jesus was. Missionaries came after the Second World War and the gospel blazed into avid circulation such that by the end of the century, over 60 healthy, biblically based churches existed.

This wonder is set against the salutary backdrop of the Sandakan death marches and massacres perpetrated by the Japanese at the end of the Second World War. These ended in Ranau on the very spot where the new church was born. Much grief and misery was replaced by miracles of massive life transformations.

This book starts with a traveller’s tale, as Jim takes his wife back to Ranau in 2013, where he once learned to walk on the now-disused airstrip. The aim was to investigate his missionary roots. The couple were delighted to find authentic faith flaming brightly throughout the whole area.

Church folk warmly welcomed them with intense respect and gratitude for the work of the pioneers in helping their indigenous SIB church to mature to a point where it now has much to teach and encourage the west.  The exciting freshness and zest for sincere, edifying relationships that were experienced is reminiscent of the early church.

The expatriate missionaries were forced to leave Borneo by the early 1970s, but SIB / BEM faith-based churches were well established with excellent biblical translations and effective pastor training situations.  New converts simply focused on applying the scriptures and they multiplied with an astounding blaze that was no less than an inspiring proclamation that this is all truly God’s story and not ours.

As Jim studied the old mission archives and fellowshipped with missionary families and spoke with local Christians, he became aware of a six stage outreach pattern that has repeated itself in world mission since the days of Paul’s great outreach journeys.

The Borneo outreach exemplifies the stages of: Calling, Contact, Consolidation, Commitment, Correction and finally the joyful exultation of Celebration, which is happening now. On 21 December 2024, there will be ceremonies in Ranau to commemorate 85 years since the Gospel came to that area.

Descendants of the pioneer missionaries have all been invited. All this is reflected in this little book, which is flavoured with exciting stories and reminders of the desperate early struggles against witch doctors, howling dogs and disease.

Innovations abound, such as the skilful use HF radio and light aircraft that predate today’s fleet of the global Missionary Aviation Fellowship planes.  In fact the BEM pilots helped to establish the Australian branch of the MAF that has been so vital to opening up Papua New Guinea and Arnhem Land to effective outreach.

What is perhaps most exquisite is the way this book demonstrates the intricate and often surprising strategies of the Holy Spirit ensuring that just the right people came together with the right backgrounds, experience, gifts and expertise at just the right time to be really effective.  The incredible undergirding of the outreach by fervent global prayer is another crucial perspective in what is a truly heavenly mix.

Gospel Blaze in Borneo will make you yearn for the great heavenly feast to come, when we will be able to swap with great joy the rich outreach stories of brave witness that has united brothers and sisters throughout the entire world ever since the resurrection mandate. This book shows just what it is like to commit to following the Firstborn towards His triumphant, eternal Kingdom, where evil no more will trouble His precious flock. Then, totally fulfilled, we are invited to rest deep in peace amidst green pastures beyond compare.

Gospel Blaze in Borneo, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – United States—Monday, October 28, 2024

Author Larry Morgan Captivates Readers with a Riveting Tale of Faith, Family, and Forgiveness in 1st Century Judea

What if the arrest of a single prisoner set in motion an unexpected transformation—one that would change the life of a hardened Roman soldier forever? In “A Centurion’s Journey”, a new historical novel by Larry Morgan, readers are transported to AD 60 in the heart of ancient Judea. A compelling blend of biblical narrative, personal struggle, and adventure, Morgan’s book offers an immersive exploration of a Roman centurion’s encounter with the Apostle Paul—and a spiritual journey he never saw coming.

Julius Vagus, an officer of the Roman Legion, is given an order to arrest a man causing an uproar: Paul, a fervent preacher of the Way and former persecutor of Christians. But what begins as a routine assignment leads Julius on an extraordinary three-year expedition from the dusty streets of Jerusalem to the perilous seas en route to Rome.

Along the way, Julius wrestles not only with turbulent waters and shipwrecks but also with the deep wounds of unresolved family conflict and the growing realization that his prisoner may hold the key to a peace he desperately needs.

With its masterful storytelling and meticulous historical detail, “A Centurion’s Journey” offers a fresh perspective on the early days of Christianity through the eyes of someone who had every reason to resist it. Readers will find themselves captivated by the characters, immersed in the dramatic settings, and compelled by the life-changing power of the gospel woven into Julius’s journey.

Larry Morgan’s  “A Centurion’s Journey” will be free and available for download on Amazon for 5 days, Tuesday, October 29 through November 3, 2024. Here’s what one reviewer said:

5 Stars The Power of Believing
This centurion character is fictional but the story is from the Book of Acts in the Bible. Very enjoyable read for any faith. Mr. Morgan has presented the data and the story line of two individuals starting out on different paths but connecting in many ways as the Centurion and the Apostle spend much time together.

beyond the music

New book will inspire those hungry for more of God

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Beyond the Music: An Insight into the heavenly realm when we worship God.

Margaret Pickstone-Dark was brought up during the 1950-1960’s in Australia. She was dominated by a strict religious group, which came with ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’ to live by until her late teens. After being released from this group, she searched for the presence of God.

She studied piano and singing and became passionate about teaching when she reached her 40’s. As she worshipped God with music, she began to see action in the heavenly realms and realised there was so much more that God wanted to reveal to His people as they opened up to Him.

Year after year, the words of the scripture from Matthew 21:13: My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations activated Margaret to pursue the house of prayer. When God led her to a Prayer and Fasting Mountain in South Korea, where she experienced an open heaven, her journey with God changed dramatically.

From praying with hundreds of thousands of Christians in South Korea, tens of thousands in Turkey and Indonesia, alone on a roof top in India, and then fighting fires in the Australian bush, before battling slippery roads and flooded streams, Margaret has learned that the power we carry as worshippers, when put into practice, can do remarkable exploits through God’s enabling.

Also carrying a burden for the lost and a heart for harvest, Margaret took Jesus’ words of: “go out into all the world and preach the good news” seriously, and spent time travelling on teams to India, Philippines and Israel.

Over the years she kept a journal of the times spent with the Lord and adventures He had taken her on. After her mother died in 1993, she began to write prolifically to cope with her grief. This was the time that she began writing Beyond the Music, her powerful new book, without realising at the time that it would one day be published and available to the outside world. Also during that period of time, she studied counselling and behavioural science, which helped her to minister to those with needs. Sharing the gospel outside the four walls of the church along with praying and caring for the sick, was a priority in her life for many years.

Margaret has been a forerunner in worship and warfare: teaching and imparting, inspiring and discipling, and bringing heaven’s sound to people in many places. After leading many prayer groups in towns and remote areas in Australia, her passion is to see the united body of Christ rise up in the type of prayer that moves mountains.

Her vision in God is seeing that people understand they are born to worship God, and realise  that nothing can compare with the joy and satisfaction He brings as we sit in His presence. This book is her first published work, and is about what pleases God and how the reader can achieve His purpose for their lives. It shows how to be aware of the unseen realm of beauty and action in heavenly places that we can enter into.

It is written for everyone who loves the Lord, to encourage every reader to be aware of their gifts and talents that God can use to accomplish His plan.

Throughout the pages of Beyond the Music, Margaret has amazingly articulated and displayed, through many real life experiences, the necessity and importance of a life lived in obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit. There is much to glean from every chapter, and readers will be left in no doubt that a life consecrated to Christ, and a walk of holiness, is truly a powerful weapon against the enemy of our souls.

If you feel there is an empty well inside of you,. or you just want more of God, then this book is for you. As the body of Christ we must connect with the Spirit of God for these end times. Beyond the Music is inspirational. It is not another book of prayer formulas and patterns; it is written by intertwining prayer and worship experiences that ushers in the presence of God and fullness of joy, leading to revival.

The book outlines God’s glorious plan of restoration of His church and kingdom. It invites the reader to look beyond the natural circumstances of life and into the spiritual realms, where God is. Beyond the Music will also encourage the reader to come into their full potential in the Holy Spirit, laying down a foundation of worship ordained by God, and use it as a weapon against the powers of darkness.

Margaret lived a single life until she married Peter Dark in 2020. They both live in the Hunter Valley, Australia. Both are passionate about serving God wherever He leads. Beyond the Music, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

Meet the failed missionary who built a $100 million kingdom business

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – A failed medical missionary seems an unlikely candidate to build a multimillion-dollar enterprise to advance the Kingdom through an unorthodox business model. Yet that is exactly where Jason T. Smith’s extraordinary journey began.

Unlikely is the inspiring true story of how Jason T. Smith went from failed medical missionary to $100 million+ Christian entrepreneur.

Jason explores triumph over spiritual adversity and faith in God in the face of personal betrayal, corporate espionage, sabotage and disloyalty.

The accidental businessman’s memoir has been described as “had to put down…” by Rev Tim Costello (World Vision) and “an authentic and accessible leadership story for those looking to integrate purpose and vocation” (SBS chairman George Savvides).

At just 24 years of age, Jason founded what would ultimately become Australia’s largest physiotherapy network, the Back In Motion Health Group.

The physiotherapist, entrepreneur and missions advocate is now a globally-recognised business strategist and award-winning leadership expert, sharing his experiences of building successful businesses without sacrificing his faith or spiritual conscience with audiences across Australia and around the world. These experiences are now detailed in his aptly-titled memoir, Unlikely, and does not just make for an interesting read, but will inspire Christian entrepreneurs the world over.

“This book began as a labour of love to give our four children an inside perspective on the miracles God did in and through us that they missed while growing up,” explains Jason.

“What started as journal entries and short testimonies eventually became over 1,000 pages of disconnected memories, prayers, reflections, and learnings. But it became apparent that a sanitised edition may be of value to a wider audience, and so my commitment to a third book was born.”

Business did not come naturally to Jason. Having tried and failed in his quest to become a medical missionary, he launched a small physiotherapy practice from his home carport. Convinced God was steering him into different pathways, Jason turned to franchising to expand his burgeoning business.

That business, the Back In Motion Health Group, flourished to become Australia’s largest physiotherapy network, with over 140 locations nationwide and a team of 700 people. In 2013, Jason was named global accountancy group Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year and by 2019, Back In Motion had been bestowed the BRW Fast Franchise Award for five consecutive years.

Its subsequent sale for over $100 million – achieved during the COVID-19 pandemic – set a new record within the industry, and became the largest and most high-profile of the many businesses Jason has successfully sold, having built from the ground up. Back In Motion Health Group was acquired in 2021 by ASX-listed company, Healthia.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

Among the major challenges Jason explores in Unlikely are reconciling his idea of calling and purpose, learning how to live out his faith in the marketplace, franchising the “un-franchiseable” of personal healthcare services, corporate espionage, legal and political entanglements, and the spiritual warfare in the face of betrayal, theft, and sabotage.

Yet his biggest challenge of all – which now forms his biggest piece of advice to other entrepreneurs – was learning how to hear God clearly and obey Him boldly when others had long since given up or claimed that something simply couldn’t be done.

“Convictions born of God trump genius ideas and creative vision. Convictions fuel these things and don’t let you give up… even when everyone and everything fails you,” Jason says.

Jason is also a firm believer in life-long learning. While Unlikely marks the third and most personal book he has penned (following 2012’s Get Yourself Back in Motion and 2018’s Outside-In Downside-Up Leadership), Jason admits to being “criticised for buying more books than I can possibly read” in a bid to soak up the wisdom and insights of others.

“My bedside stack of books is overwhelming and often prone to topple!” he confesses.

Not content to rest on his successes, Jason now spends his days trying to practice what he preaches as a lay leader in his local church, giving time and resource to missional philanthropic work aimed at empowering many of the world’s poorest communities, and discipling thousands of aspiring social and commercial entrepreneurs through his Iceberg Leadership Institute.

“Our lives are filled with the wonders of family, friendship, fame, fortune, and fun… but often lack a meaningful purpose: Faith! There is a personal mission for each one of us to discover from God. And we cannot afford to miss the daily opportunities to make a difference in the world around us,” Jason concludes.

“I hope Unlikely inspires others to live and lead with faith and conviction; to identify what is most important and do something about it; and to remember that God is faithful to his promises – a role model for us all to follow, in business and in life.”

Jason is also the author of three books, including his memoir Unlikely (Ark House Press, 2024), a keynote speaker, and founder of the Iceberg Leadership Institute. Unlikely, published by Ark House Press, is now available globally.

Significant Revelation Ministries training God’s people in strategies of SPIRITUAL WARFARE

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – “Deliverance is the children’s bread” (Mark 7:27)

The average reader would be surprised to know that many pastors, church leaders and members have absolutely no idea as to what spiritual warfare or deliverance is, or how they pertain to the body of Christ in the 21st century.

Significant Revelation Ministries is charged to teach churches in this ignored, but highly crucial aspect of Jesus’ personal ministry.

Sermons of correction have been exchanged with feel-good, palatable reflections of the easy to digest prosperity movement, manifesting positive vibrations, being kind to the universe, thinking happy thoughts and/or plain old “good karma.”

Currently, there are men and women of God in your church who love the Lord, and who are suffering with demonic oppression, the impact of generational curses (i.e. porn and other addictions, poverty, witchcraft, lust, perversion, gender confusion, religiosity, etc.) and the lasting effects of ungodly soul ties.

Though there are over one hundred scriptures pertaining to witches, devils, demons, and unclean spirits, many churches do not acknowledge the reality of dark forces and/or the desperate necessity of sanctioning spiritual warfare. Such congregations are sitting ducks and easy prey for the devourer.

Be warriors!

In our ministry we see the evidence of the devil’s footprint daily in the lives of so many of God’s oppressed and bound children.

Believers, it is imperative that we study our enemy. We are not to fear him, but we ought not ignore his ability to influence either. The Bible says that the angels of heaven were perfectly created to serve and worship the Father. Does the Bible not also report that the god of this world influenced 1/3rd of them?

Do you fathom for a minute that we are able to outwit him, sidestep his many snares and traps or circumvent his influence without the involvement of the Holy Spirit? Really? He has a 6000-year head start on thinking.

It is my contention that demonic influence may be what has permitted churches to flourish in this fallen world without actually doing what Jesus himself instructed us all to do.

Think on it, there are churches with thousands upon thousands of members or parishioners that never discuss demons or teach their flock about their authority as a child of the Most High.  Yet the One they preach about is the One who we are to follow and one third of His ministry included casting out demons, setting captives free and healing the sick.

Religion, fear, ignorance, and comfort have complicated God’s word. Jesus says in John 14:15, “If ye love Me, keep My commandments.”   We do know the difference between a request and command, right? If so, then how is your church, better yet how exactly are you interpreting the following communication as presented by Jesus Himself? For you Bible readers, its written in red, check it out, Mathew 10:8,  “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons…”  Is this a request or a command?

It is nearly effortless now to find teachers to tickle your ears, and churches who desire to impress you with concerts and eloquent motivational speakers.  These churches may be referred to as “easy listening” ministries.

Remember the devil does not mind if you go to church, he just does not want you to change.

Absorb the following scripture, Mark 1:39: “And He was preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and casting out demons.”  So, if your leaders are preaching and NOT casting out devils, are they doing what Jesus did? Religion, fear, ignorance, and comfort have complicated God’s word. This question is as simple as the one Jesus presented in John 5:6, “Do you want to be made well?” These questions only oblige a “yes or no” answer. It is not multiple choice nor does it call for an essay…“yes or no?”

If you believe in Jesus, then the following scriptures are directed toward you: Mark 16:17-20: “And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons”; later the scripture reads “they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” And Mark 20 says “they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs.”

The devil “is eating our lunch” and many Christians are focusing on being politically correct, people pleasing, fitting in or place an emphasis on being liked.

Listen, this is an extremely critical time. I recently read a report that suggests that by 2045, Christianity will be the minority religion in a country where presidents swear on the Holy Bible when they are inaugurated and our money literally says “in God we trust.”  Another report boasts that Christianity is expected to lose a net of 66 million adherents between 2010 and 2050. If this is true, is it conceivable that people are abandoning Christianity because they do not see the power of the Holy Spirit in the church?

John 10:37-38, Jesus says, “If I do not do the works of My Father, then do not believe Me. But if I am doing them, even if you do not believe Me or have faith in Me, believe the works.”

If they saw us working like Jesus, why would they ever leave Him?

John 14:12: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.”

Jesus says that he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do. Would you like to do the greater works He promised? If so, you must make efforts to meet Him in the “also.”

Let us stop only talking about what Jesus did, only praying about what Jesus did, only reading and studying about what Jesus did, and do what Jesus did!

Stop talking about it and be about it!

Our church is booked well into 2025 for deliverance appointments! A believer who I recently ministered to claims that she has been on another church’s  deliverance waiting list for 2 years! Another believer claimed that she visited 5 churches and no one would help her. Readers, how can this be if we are following Jesus’ commands and are actually operating as doers of the Holy word?

Be a doer!

If the Bible says that we have authority in Luke 10:19, “ Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you”; then why isn’t the entire bride of Christ equipped to fight against the army of darkness? Get equipped!

the woke opiate

New Book Exposes the Woke Revolution – A Marxist Pandemic!

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – “All cultural norms, values and institutions in western society are structured to empower the white race and oppress minority races, particularly blacks” — Derrick Bell.

Critical Race Theory’s revisionist history claims that America, and Western Culture was founded on racism, instead of freedom— “Race is not ‘biologically grounded and natural’ rather, it is a socially constructed category used to oppress and exploit people of color.”

Structural Racism is the cumulative effect of racism in “multiple institutions and cultural norms, past and present, continually reproducing old and producing new forms of racism”1 — Structural Racism is, according to CRT, the primary source of all forms of racism. CRT concludes that “racism is systemic.”2

And therefore, American and Western Culture must be completely dismantled (critical equity calls for the total leveling of the West following the “long march through the institutions,” that is, following the infiltration of Western Culture’s “superstructure,” e.g., religion, family, education, law and media, by Woke Marxist Ideology).

The leveling of the Democratic Republic of America and Western Civilization makes way for the rise of the Marxist Socialist State, a prelude to Communism. The “Party’s” “emancipation,” that is, the Progressive Left’s rise to totalitarian power supersedes everything on the Ruling Elites’ politically correct agenda, e.g., Socialism, Racism, Identity, etc.

Why do Americans, and conscientious people throughout Western Culture, need to read this book, The Woke Opiate, and better understand classic and contemporary Marxism? The answer requires a single sentence: In the preface of a 1947 Ukrainian edition of Animal Farm, George Orwell expressed, “… how easily totalitarian propaganda can control the opinion of enlightened people in democratic countries.”3

Kevin D. Roberts’ commentary on American History begins with a brief, profoundly invaluable story that in his words, “distills the challenge before America today.”4 The story is only a sentence more than a single paragraph, but wisdom does not require much space:

At the end of the Constitutional Convention, as delegates emerged from their secret deliberations, a Philadelphia woman— one “Mrs. Powell” — asked Pennsylvania delegate Benjamin Franklin what kind of government the convention had given them.

Franklin answered her: “A republic … if you can keep it.”5

The Declaration of Independence proclaims, “Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”— The moment “We the People” (“the governed”) lose our unalienable right to “consent” to be governed, the sovereign would no longer be outside the government (Lincoln) but centralized in it— We would have failed to keep our Republic and “We the People” will be found living under the oppression of a totalitarian socialist state.

Western Culture is at the intersection of two extremes. Both extremes were remarkably predicted in two classics: The first extreme is from George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949)6 and the second extreme originated in the imagination of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932).7

Jefrey Breshears observes: “While Orwell warned of an oppressive regime that controlled the media and utilized propaganda to spread lies and suppress the truth, Huxley depicted a self-absorbed, complacent and entertainment-obsessed society in which no one cared about the truth.”8

I wrote this book, The Woke Opiate, to tell everyone, We are on the brink of losing our Republic!

The Woke Opiate, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

2 Ibid. Examples of this assertion are discussed by the authors quoted above: “… we can see structural racism in the many institutional, cultural, and structural factors that contribute to lower life expectancy for African American and Native American men, compared to white men. These include higher exposure to environmental toxins, dangerous jobs and unhealthy housing stock, higher exposure to and more lethal consequences for reacting to violence, stress, and racism, lower rates of health care coverage, access, and quality of care, and systematic refusal by the nation to fix these things.”

The Most Important Medicine for our Teenagers Outlined in Revealing New Book

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Dr Diana Adis Tahhan (PhD) sees it all. She sees the brokenness of teenagers in her clinic daily: the unsatiated desires for, and attachment to, the things of this world; self-harm, pornography and sexual experimentation; identity confusion, bullying, and the dangers of social media and device use.

Many teenagers are being beckoned into a cyber-playground that keeps them up at night, agitated and anxious, unable to find peace amidst the noisy confusion of the world. They have lost sight of who they are and Whose they are.

Teenagers are often brought to see Dr Diana when conventional medicine hasn’t worked. Parents are at their wits end, finding it difficult to navigate bringing up their teenagers in this ever changing, secular world.

They have been medicalised, pathologized, and in many cases, this has simply masked the real dis-ease: an unsettledness in their hearts and a restlessness in their spirits that has not been healed. For many it can’t be, not until they find rest in something much greater than what this world can offer.

Dr Diana writes about many of these issues in her new book, The Truth About Highschool: An Applied Philosophy For Life. This powerful and practical book offers relevant and interesting examples and experiences to help the reader unpack their emotions and lived experience. Dr Diana provides simple, yet powerful tools to disconnect from the fleshless, virtual world so that we can make meaningful changes to our lives.

Although The Truth About High School is written for teens, its powerful message is relevant to us all. It will also help parents, grandparents, educators and carers find peace amidst the noise in their own lives, and learn how to apply this for teenagers and children.

The message in this book highlights for our teenagers, and for us all, the most important medicine of all. It is the first of her Truth Series, which all address real-life struggles and experiences, whilst providing tools to help people find hope and healing.

Her Truth Series is about unwavering hope, each book providing a context to challenge the current narrative and provide real life examples and practical tools and exercises to help readers connect with a higher purpose, a bigger story, a greater truth that will change your life.

Dr Diana is an author, speaker, Multidiscipline Therapist and the founder of Sydney Healing and Research Centre. She combines insights from psychology, theology, sociology, neuroscience, olfactory science, medical anthropology and the science of touch to help people address their emotional and physical health holistically.

She teaches about the power of the mind and the various natural therapies available to help bring people to homeostasis. From this relaxed state, and a deep awareness of what they can do to help themselves heal, Dr Diana empowers people to improve their lives naturally. As an Orthodox Christian, Dr Diana also applies, where relevant, the wisdom and insights of her faith. She is the mother of three children, and together with her husband Daniel, are raising them to stand in truth and faith.

The Truth About Highschool: An Applied Philosophy For Life, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

Prison Chaplain Releases Devotion Successfully Used to Introduce Gospel to Inmates

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – After years of working with marginalised groups in the community and in prisons, Suz Foley  has provided a vital resource for adults in an effort to help them engage in faith – even though most of them lack confidence in reading, knowledge of the bible and church life.

Her results working in the prison system as a Senior Prison Chaplain to date have been amazing. Those that learn visually have been coming to Christ in reading her devotion, Beloved One, and she is now releasing it to the general market in an effort to share the Gospel with a much wider audience.

Beloved One is a unique visual devotion of the Gospel of John for adults who are exploring faith and seeking a new life. “People that I meet are spirituality thirsty, but struggle to navigate the bible, church and sermons,” Suz stated.

“They don’t feel comfortable or welcome in the typical Middle-Class church. They need something more accessible to them when they’ve had a hard life, so they can feel they belong and can understand God. They need examples that reflect the kind of struggles they have, and not sanitised examples from people who haven’t experienced trauma, disadvantage, incarceration, or marginalisation, which is most of the general church world.”

Developed from her own season of exploring the Bible by painting one chapter at a time, Suz realised that the thought-provoking paintings could be used to engage readers. She wrote accompanying devotions on the Gospel of John that are informative and inclusive, with language that welcomes people to have their own opinions and reflections that lead them on a journey.

Suz states, “I knew I had to publish the book when one person said to me, ‘Why can’t the whole Bible be like this? I can understand it when I read your book.’ Though the reader was in her fifties, she was praying for the first time after she realised that hatred and bitterness had controlled her life for too long and she needed to do something different.

“She read Beloved One, and her relationship with God grew as she understood what he was like and what Jesus had done for her. God has turned her life around, allowing her to gradually forgive the people who wronged her, and to enjoy life. This is one of many stories people have told me, so I’m confident that the visual devotional is a useful tool, and helps people come closer to God.

“I’m committed to providing more resources for this group of people who have been ignored for too long.”

Suz previously worked as an Occupational Therapist, Pastor, and Community Centre Director, and has wide experience of working with people with disability, mental health issues, addictions, homelessness and poverty. The book has been trialled at South Australian prisons, where it was warmly received, and Beloved One has now been published as a resource to professionals working with marginalised people, and for people looking for a relevant gift for friends and family.

If you’re looking for resources to engage people with the Bible who haven’t found it an easy read, or struggle to see how it’s relevant to them, then Beloved One is a must read. The paintings have a naïve style and are expressionist, conveying the emotional responses of the characters to the events that are happening in the text. The pictures convey context, without needing to explain it in words.  It is useful for people exploring faith, finding their feet as Christians, or going deeper in their relationship with God.

Healing or Homecoming? Finding God When Life Is in the Balance

New Book Confronts Faith Amid Life’s Deepest Questions: Healing or Homecoming? Finding God When Life Is in the Balance – Will be Free to Download Tomorrow, October 15, 2024

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – United States—Monday, October 14, 2024

How do you hold on to faith when you’re staring down life’s greatest heartache? Can you still believe in a good and sovereign God when healing doesn’t come? In “Healing or Homecoming? Finding God When Life Is in the Balance,” Cheryl Liberatore invites readers into an emotional, thought-provoking journey through the parallel stories of her husband John and daughter Kara—both diagnosed with aggressive, terminal cancer. As one survives and the other passes away, Cheryl’s story wrestles with the question: How do we reconcile different outcomes under the same God?

Told with unflinching honesty and unwavering faith, “Healing or Homecoming” is more than a personal narrative—it’s a powerful exploration of life’s most difficult questions:

  • Where is God in the midst of suffering?
  • Why does one person experience miraculous healing while another doesn’t?
  • Does God have a divine plan even in the face of death?
  • Can there be hope and purpose beyond devastating loss?

Liberatore draws readers into her family’s experience, allowing them to walk through both miraculous healing and heartbreaking loss. As she reflects on the starkly different outcomes, Cheryl gently leads readers to a deeper understanding of God’s faithfulness, not dependent on circumstance but anchored in His eternal purposes.

In an era where faith is often measured by tangible outcomes, “Healing or Homecoming” dares to challenge the notion that God’s goodness depends on whether we receive the answer we desire. It boldly declares that whether we experience healing on earth or “homecoming” in heaven, God is present, sovereign, and deeply involved in our lives.

Cheryl Liberatore’s, “Healing or Homecoming?” will be free and available for download on Amazon for 5 days, Tuesday, October 15 through October 19, 2024. “Healing or Homecoming?” is rated 5 stars by those who purchased and reviewed the book. Here’s what just a couple of the reviewers have said:

5 Stars  Beautiful book about God’s steadfast faith

This is a must read. The journey the author describes of both her late husband and daughter diagnosis with aggressive, terminal cancers is gut wrenching but her faith throughout both journeys is steadfast. Throughout the book there are scriptures of strength, resilience and finding faith when it may be hard to do so. Whether you have faced a similar situation or not, this book shows the true faithfulness of our God.

‘Missions:Together’ to host Triangle gathering Nov. 2 to reignite passion for missions

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – Raleigh, N.C. – Missions:Together will host its second annual regional gathering on Saturday, Nov. 2, hosted at The Summit Church in Apex, with a focus on what it means to live a life on mission with like-minded believers. The conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with free lunch provided. It is a gathering for Great Commission-focused pastors, leaders and believers prepared to have their passion for missions reignited.

Missions:Together (M:T) will feature times of worship, practical teaching, action-oriented prayer, breakout sessions and opportunities to network with representatives from a spectrum of missions efforts, including Pioneer Bible Translators. With a number of Triangle churches represented, Missions:Together will feature Geoff Bradford, Christ the King, Raleigh; Walter Strickland, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; Jono Darville, Peace Church, Cary; Pioneer Bible Translators’ JR Bucklew; Andrew Steier of Alwaysgoing.org; Greg Kelley of Unknown Nations; Tom Cox of West African Reformed Mission; and more.

This year’s theme is “Not a Competition,” which emphasizes unity over siloed ministry efforts, while providing practical strategies for churches to achieve mission acceleration. Main sessions will cover unity between congregations, competing together against darkness, joining efforts with parachurch ministries, and the goal of missions. Attendees can choose from five breakout sessions that cover missional living topics in different contexts.

At least 20 exhibitors will be present at the gathering, offering attendees multiple opportunities to serve in local and international settings. The organizations represent work in foster care, education, Christian media, public witness, Bible translation, Christian publishing and church planting, student outreach, and more.

“We dream of a day when congregations work together in a truly intentional, relational, and genuine way,” said Mark Knetsch, Vision Director for M:T. “We hope for this reality because the Holy Spirit accelerates missions by activating gospel unity. Missions:Together is a missional mosaic of churches seeking to do just that.”

“Pastors desire for their flock to grow in Christ and go on mission, whether that’s across the street or across the ocean. M:T wants to help churches and leaders accomplish both – with a network of like-minded, action-oriented believers. We harness the power of ‘Go!’”

Ryan Doherty, pastor of prayer and mobilization at The Summit Church in Apex, said about the upcoming event, “When a united body of believers work together, we reflect the love of Christ and advance God’s mission with greater power and purpose.”

Pastors, church leaders, missions organization staff and other individuals are encouraged to bring teams, small groups and friends. There is no registration cost for the event, but participants are invited to contribute as they feel led.

Fantasy Young Adult Novel Features Personal Stories, Contemporary Situations, and Eternal Issues Based on True Events

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – “Young adult books have been the fastest-growing category over the last 5 years, with print unit sales jumping by 48.2% since 2018,” according to Dimitrije Curcic of the international research data and analytics group WordsRated. The appeal is wide with over half of the people who buy YA books between the ages of thirty and forty-four years of age.

Adding to current offerings is The Chronicles of Emunah: Hazel Atlas and the Doorway to Ohr by Emily Spencer Kane and published by Redemption Press. Kane, a debut author from East Tennessee, based her fantasy young adult novel featuring contemporary situations on eternal truths and real events.

Hazel Atlas is used to being ordinary, until one ride in her brother’s truck changes everything. Hazel is saved from a crash by a mysterious hooded stranger, but her brother is severely injured. As Emmett struggles with pain and anger, Hazel searches for answers to help him. Her search leads her to a doorway that opens to an unseen realm, layered on top of earth.

Suddenly propelled outside of all she knows, Hazel finds herself in the middle of a tug-of-war between the ancient powers of good and evil. She must dig deeper than she ever has before in search of the truth that will change her life forever.

Rich with spiritual undertones and biblical truth, The Chronicles of Emunah is a creative retelling of Emily Spencer Kane’s own adventures and the beginning of her story with God. She says, “Although this book is based in the fantasy realm and seems like a remarkable, creative fable, the majority of these themes and characters were inspired by real people and events.”

In three years she traveled through thirty countries, spanning five continents, and returned home brimming with memories of miraculous encounters, rich culture, thrilling adventures, and inspiring people. Brave Enough to Risk Change, to Live Free

From Shame to Freedom – New Book by Mary Jane Armstrong Offers Hope and Healing for Those Suffering from Unprocessed Trauma

FAITH NEWS SERVICE –Will be Free for Five Days to Download Starting Tomorrow, October 8, 2024

United States—Monday, October 7, 2024

In a world where unresolved childhood trauma and emotional wounds often manifest in adult relationships and hinder spiritual growth, Mary Jane Armstrong offers a beacon of hope with her powerful new release, “Brave Enough to Risk Change, to Live Free: A Story of Healing and Hope.” This deeply personal and transformational book shares her own candid journey from shame to freedom in Christ, providing both transparency and wisdom for those longing to experience the same healing.

Armstrong’s story is one of raw vulnerability. Raised in a dysfunctional home where abuse and trauma left deep emotional scars, she carried the shame and lies from her past into adulthood, affecting her marriage, relationships, and ministry. But through her brave pursuit of healing, she encountered the life-changing power of God, who led her to confront her past and ultimately find freedom.

“When you are brave enough to allow the Spirit to search and clean out the darkness within, your story becomes His story of redemption, power, and transformation,” says Armstrong. “It becomes a story of hope and promises for a future that we cannot humanly comprehend; a story others need to hear before the darkness swallows them up.”

With the same grace and courage that fueled her personal transformation, Armstrong now helps others embrace the possibility of a life free from the chains of their past. Readers who have experienced trauma—whether recent or rooted in childhood—will find comfort, inspiration, and practical tools to begin their own healing journey.

“Brave Enough to Risk Change, to Live Free” is more than a book. It’s a roadmap for anyone who desires to break free from shame and find healing through the Spirit of God, community, and faith. Pastors, ministry leaders, counselors, and individuals seeking emotional and spiritual healing will discover a profound resource that speaks to the heart of our shared human experience.

Mary Jane Armstrong’s  “Brave Enough to Risk Change, to Live Free” will be free and available for download on Amazon for 5 days, Tuesday, October 8 through October 12, 2024. “Brave Enough to Risk Change, to Live Free” is rated highly by those who purchased and reviewed the book. Video gaming Christians: it’s time to put your faith where your controller is

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – A new book is set to encourage and challenge followers of Jesus through video and computer games. Press Upwards is a devotional using 50 of the most popular video and computer games to draw out Biblical truths and inspiration.

From Minesweeper to Mario Kart, Pong to Prince of Persia, Tetris to Tomb Raider, Press Upwards explores themes such as scripture, forgiveness, faith, prayer, love, endurance, temptation and more.

The easy-to-read devotionals are short enough to spark curiosity from a casual glance, and just long enough to stir the conscience. With an ideal mix of classic retro titles (think: PAC-Man, Galaga, Pitfall!, Lemmings) through to more current mega-hits like Fortnite and Minecraft, the book contains devotions to pique the interest for gamers from all walks of life.

And while games may be the “hook”, at the heart of the book is an adherence to scripture and the amazing story of love God has for the world, as shown through His son, Jesus.

Each devotion is thought-provoking and easy to digest, with a dash of humour (and the occasional gamer in-joke) thrown in as well. The end of each devotional includes a key Bible verse, plus other recommended reading verses to look up.

Press Upwards is not just ideal for personal reflection times but can also be used to stimulate small group discussion, Bible studies, conversation starters and even youth group or kids club talks.

The need

According to Australia’s Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA), 91 per cent of Australian households own a video game device. In the United States, the Entertainment Software Association says 61 per cent of the US population reports playing video games for at least one hour every week, with 190.6 million Americans aged between five and 90 playing games.

And don’t think video games are just for the teenager; plenty of middle-aged to elderly players, both male and female, have a sneaky copy of Candy Crush Saga, Solitaire or Wordle stashed on their phones, ready to tap away at when a spare moment arises.

(According to the IGEA, 42 per cent of those aged 65 and over identify as gamers.)

No doubt there would be Christians within these statistics, however it also stands as a potentially huge mission field for the many unreached players.

The author

Press Upwards has been a labour of love for Australian author, Ashley Walmsley.

Ashley has been a journalist for more than 20 years and has played video games for even longer than that. He doesn’t have a cool, edgy online username (his occasional use of EmuWalker doesn’t exactly capture the imagination) but he has spent a lot of time in front of screens aiming for the next level, collecting rings, defending backyards from zombies and upgrading vehicles.

“Some of my cherished childhood memories are connected to video games,” Ashley said.

“I suspect that would be the case for many people.”

Generations are coming through now that grew up with a controller in their hand; they’ve always known or had a console or system. There’s an opportunity there to use that pastime to drive those players deeper into God’s Word.

“Like the radio, comic books and television before them, video games have copped a bad wrap in how they can affect behaviour or infiltrate thinking. And yes, we have to be careful what we play and how much we play it, but games can also be used to remind us to open our Bibles more often.”

Still playing

As the responsibilities of being a grown-up make gaming time a little thinner these days, Ashley has found a renewed purpose (and let’s face it, an excuse) to enjoy games even more by sharing them with his three children. “It dawned on me one day that I’d never actually thrown out a video game system,” he said. “Consequently I have a collection of consoles and games stored away.

“From my original Sega Master II, with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built-in of course, through to the Nintendo Switch housing Super Mario Bros. Wonder today. It got me thinking that perhaps there was a bigger purpose to me putting in those hours of controller mashing, that could perhaps further God’s kingdom.”

The list of games is sure to create goodtime (or maybe frustration) flashbacks for older gamers who stood at arcade machines in the local fish and chip shop, and at the same time draw the attention of modern, younger gamers who may never have looked at their particular favourite title in that way. For instance, the tower-defence style game Age of Empires can provide a snapshot of what it must be like to be an overall creator, watching on and caring for a tribe.

Would a player be willing to become one of the digital characters in order to save them and show them a better way, just like Jesus did for the world? Or could Pokemon Go players who are out there hunting, seeking and looking, tell us about man’s longing for something deeper, to connect with others and a divine creator?

“Hopefully it will open up some spiritual discussions as readers flick through and lock onto a game they used to play, and share that with their family and friends,” he said. “Then there is the outreach potential of the medium.

“While it may not always be easy to strike up a conversation about Jesus, drumming up a chat over a video game can be an accessible in-road.”

Ashley is an elder at Oakwood Community Church in the agricultural town of Bundaberg, in regional Queensland. He can remember the family receiving an Atari 2600 (well, a clone brand of one) and being mesmerised by the pixelated wonder of Dragon Attack.

Ashley has also dabbled in stand up comedy, finishing runner-up in the 2009 Triple J Raw Comedy Awards in Melbourne.

Since then, he’s done performances at various functions over the years and helped MC conferences as well. His loving and long-suffering wife Pauline tolerates his occasional gaming sessions. Press Upwards, published by Ark House, is now available globally.

countenance matthew lee

Matthew Lee’s newly released “Countenance” is an introspective journey of reflection and faith

FAITH NEWS SERVICE – “Countenance”: a pathway to greater understanding. “Countenance” is the creation of published author, Matthew Lee, who studied mathematics at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, where he received a commission as a naval officer.

Lee shares, “Countenance is facial expression. This is, at least, what I write in the book, and what I write in the book I hope to be true. What I write in the book is just a collection of thoughts that I have taken the time to notice, and what I have noticed is that my thoughts, as with all thoughts, are more or less treasured.

“They are things that make me laugh, things that create feelings of nostalgia, and things that, if I am lucky enough, find a way to move me to tears. If I am lucky enough, they reveal to me something about this brilliant life that I live and, if I am even luckier, something about this brilliant life’s Creator. This is what makes thoughts treasured.

“This is what makes them sacred, and as they find ways to change my countenance, I ought to take the time to notice. I ought to take the time to consider. Noticing and considering could make all the difference in how I end up seeing this life. I could end up experiencing a whole new countenance.

“Or if I am again lucky, I could end up experiencing a countenance that is lifted higher above the rest.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Matthew Lee’s new book is more than just a book—it is a companion for the soul, guiding readers on a journey of introspection and revelation.

Consumers can purchase “Countenance” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.
